The box-office smash from France, Mina Tannenbaum, highlights the opening of the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival on Wednesday, May 10. Screening of the film will be at 7:30 at Pacific Cinematheque, 1131 Howe St.
On Thursday, May 11, the film will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Centre Norman Rothstein Theatre. It will be followed that night by a "French" reception.
The film profiles Mina and Ethel, two young girls from Ashkenazi and Sephardic families who meet regularly on a bench in Montmartre. They laugh, share secrets and survive romances and fierce tussles with their Jewish mothers.
Directed by Martine Dugowson, the film shares the pain of the awkward Ethel, played by Elisa Zylberstein, and the cool assurance of Mina, played by Romane Bohringer.
Ethel's mother is concerned that her daughter marry within her faith. Mina can't understand her Survivor parents' obsession with the Holocaust. As the pair grow into adulthood, Ethel is racked with jealousy over Mina's success as an artist.
Critics have called the movie "funny", "moving" and "full of inventive visual tricks." Mina Tannenbaum has been hailed as combining "Jewish angst and French wistfulness into a soulful sigh over a cup of black coffee."
