Neale rakes harbors board for
"The only thing the National Harbors Board seems to understand is pressure — and even that doesn't always work," according to Vancouver East NDP candidate C. P. (Paddy) Neale.
Commenting on the future of the harbors board lands on Wall Street — the site of the Columbia Grain Elevator now being demolished — Neale noted that even after six months of pressure by local residents, efforts of a federal member and personal intervention of a provincial cabinet minister, the harbors board still has not informed local residents of its plans for the area.
Neale told a campaign meeting that the issue is the future of the grain elevator lands, which the Hastings Townsite Residents Association and others have tried to secure for parkland or some other community facility.
"Despite long efforts by residents, which included aid from Grace Mclnnis, M.P., it was not until the association wired provincial lands and forests minister Bob Williams that any progress at all was made," he said.
Following discussions with Williams, Neale reported to the meeting that the Port Authority had finally agreed to hold up the sale of this land, earlier scheduled to be sold on the private market, pending consideration by the provincial government.
"But it took a lot of pressure even to get this far," he added.
"What I want to know, and so do a lot of other people, is why transport minister Don Jameson has never bothered to reply to the questions raised by residents.
"This complete lack of responsibility must be stopped. It's not just this one issue but the whole question of the harbors board's attitude toward the east end of the city.
"The Liberals make fine-sounding noises about no landfills, no heavy industry and no waterfront highways west of Main Street. But what about east of Main Street?"
Neale told the meeting that as MP for Vancouver East he would place special emphasis on compelling the harbors board to consider the desires of east end residents.
Fisheries Service lays two counts against BCR
The Fisheries Service announced this week that charges are being laid against B.C. Railway, formerly the PGE, following two construction slides in spring salmon spawning areas of the Bear River, a tributary of the Skeena system, in late September.
Slides triggered by road construction temporarily blocked the river, leaving silt deposits and debris on the spawning grounds. Department staff members flew into the area by helicopter September 30 to check damage to the fishery.
The department says this is the first time charges have been laid against a provincial crown corporation under the amended Fisheries Act, which carries a maximum fine of $5,000 for each day an offence occurs under a section dealing with damage to waters frequented by fish.
Charges laid under the same section against a spraying contractor alleged to have been responsible for a fish kill in Surrey in August will now be dealt with in court on November 9.

Tammen Pole Services entered a plea of not guilty to the charge in provincial court at Cloverdale on October 5.
The fish kills allegedly occurred after a hydro power pole had been sprayed with chemical preservative. Coho fry, trout and other species were found dead in a tributary creek of the Campbell River following the spraying.
Live abalone flown to Japan
SYDNEY — Live abalone are now being flown from Tasmania to Japan, where they sell for close to $3 a kilogram (2.2 pounds).
Success with the air freighting of live abalone, packed in specially developed lightweight polystyrene boxes, has encouraged a trial shipment of live lobsters, packed in wood shavings.
Australia already ships fresh, chilled and frozen bluefin tuna to Japan by air.
