Seven sign Baltic pact on pollution
HELSINKI — The seven countries ringing the Baltic Sea have concluded a unique antipollution agreement.
For decades the great port cities from Leningrad in the east to Copenhagen in the west have poured their sewage and industrial wastes into the Baltic until its waters are among the most heavily polluted in the world. Surveys have shown that its bed is buried deep in sludge over, large areas.
Now, in what is hailed as a model of international cooperation, the Soviet Union, Poland, German Democratic . Republic, German Federal Republic, Denmark, Sweden and Finland have agreed to prohibit the dumping of organic wastes from vessels, end the discharge of DDT and other chemical compounds from industrial plants and undertake a systematic campaign to clean up the polluted waters.
The agreement provides that if drilling by any of the signatory countries proves up oil and natural gas fields underlying the sea bed, such fields can only be exploited when all signatories are satisfied that the development will not lead to pollution.
Tuna landings below average
British Columbia fishermen contributed 2.7 million pounds of the 41.5 million pounds of albacore landed at North American Pacific coast ports last year. Total landings were far short of the 70.2 million pounds reported in 1972 and below the 10-year average of 44 million pounds. /.

• These photos of the sinking of the seiner K Charles were taken by Bill Gardiner of Campbell River from the deck of the seiner Quadra Isle last fall and given to The Fisherman recently. The K Charles capsized on Ocober 28 when she was caught in a tide rip in Seymour Narrows. Skipper Aubrey Roberts of North Delta turned the Quadra Isle, aboard which Gardiner was a crewman, to go to her assistance. "We saw her turn on her side (top) and by the time we picked up her crew, her stern was down (centre)," Gardiner reported. "She sank quickly, with white foam gushing from her bow as she went under (bottom)."
