Dredging will damage habitat
Help! The Feds are at it again: this time in the name of habitat replacement a marsh will be destroyed by dredging Paramount Harbour in Steveston.
They are asking the provincial government for changes in their lease agreements for Shady (Steveston) Island so they can destroy already existing habitat in the middle of the island to create "compensatory marshes" for the habitat that will be dredged to enhance moorage facilities in Paramount Basin.
Concerns about the "marsh" proposal include:
• The proposal would involve encroachment on a red-tailed hawks' nesting territory, rare vegetation, the trees and current fish habitat.
• An agreement would apparently give the federal
government control of the island.
• The City of Richmond would again lose its bid to acquire the island as a natural park.
• Steveston Harbour Authority would like to add Shady Island to its holdings.
• The federal government promised in 1983 to leave the island alone.
This deal could be changed if there is enough public outcry to save Shady Island, its benchmark flora and fauna, its fish habitat and its protective function for the harbour and fish processing plants.

Stop Atlantic salmon farming
The provincial Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (AFF) is under pressure to allow lake-pen rearing of Atlantic salmon smolts.
Fish reared in lakes grow faster than fish in ocean pens. Yet farmed Atlantic salmon have devastated wild stocks in Scotland, Norway and
Sweden, due to diseases transmitted from farmed to wild salmon, escapees (over two million per year in Europe), and to the fungicides and antibiotics used in farming operations.
Four B.C. lake have been chosen for raising Atlantic salmon — Ewart, Viola, Georgie and Lois — the latter being stocked before transport permits were issued. Kennedy Lake on Vancouver Island was also coveted, until pressure from commercial and sport fishermen quashed that option.
What does AFF think about our concerns for the health of our wild stocks? Not much, according to a telephone conversation between the Steelhead Society and aqua-culture managers. How many lakes are we talking about? That depends on the "market," according to AFF.
Healthy stocks of wild salmonids are important to the futures of commercial and sport fishermen. Voice your concerns.
