This is just a note to The Fisherman, as there is not very much the. way of news.
Fish News Vague
The fishing news here is very vague. We have not put in a full day on the grounds yet, so the reports I have are not up to snuff for the simple reason that we have been listening to the radio, which is my main means of getting the news.
A few weeks ago there were a few springs off Cape Beale with some of the boats landing as high as 700 pounds for a day, with low boat getting around a hundred. The "Monabelle'' was one that landed 700. Fred Barber was doing good too; Jack Homer on the "Nipen-tuck" was in to Victoria with a trip from this general area and caught about that time around 2500 pounds for the trip. The Tingleys on the "Simula" had about the same amount of fish.
The "Hilliei Queen'' was in with 15,000 pounds of halibut from off coxswain (I believe that is his ! Barkley Sound, and I see the "Cape proper title) pulled the lanyard j May" has a "kingsize" Christmas that fired the gun, which went off ! tree on this year, with quite a bang. Apparently they | Don on the
We got under way from Victoria and got as far as Bamfleld where we have laid tied up to the Billy Fullerton float for the last day or so.
I asked Billy what was new in Bamfleld and he said "nothing," so I guess that's pretty well the picture in this area. I see they have built two or three new large buildings at the Bamfleld lifesaving station (use that term "lifesaving station" very conservatively, as to me that is just a means of identifying a certain geographical position). I see the lawn at the station came through the winter alright and is as green as ever.
Talking about the lawn at the station reminds me of the time in the spring of 1934 when the crew at the station were putting on a show for the boys on how to get a line to a ship with a Lyle gun. Well, the show went fine up until the
overloaded the gun, because the shot went off over towards Grapple Creek and took all the line with it and I don't believe the shot or the line has ever been seen since.
To my knowledge, that was the last show that was ever attempted in "How to handle a Lyle gun" by the Bamfleld lifesaving crew.
Early Bird II" was tied up here at Fullerton's wharf when we came in. Don has his wife with him for this trip. Paddy Randall, his partner, is in Vancouver with a bad back, but Don figures that he will be in condition to sail with him next time he hits port. Don was going out today to take the wrinkles out of his gear.

The "Viking II" and "Viking III" have been around here for a week or two. The big "Viking" picked up 1800 pounds of springs out of that run off Cape Beale I mentioned above. Floyd Christney has not been letting much grass grow under his feet either when it comes to catching up to those springs. He was high boat by far at the Kyu-quot Camp last night when he landed 660 pounds of springs. It took 103 fish to make up that weight, whicn speaks for itself when it comes to size. The fish here are for the most part small, which accounts for the absence of the American boats, as most of the fish I have seen landed and loaded on : the packer would not pass their 27-inch legal size limit.
A Co-op Roar
The "Cooperator I" came roaring
into camp with her 500 horse General Motors Gray making quite a commotion in the night air. Andy Johnson, who has been engineer for the Island Tug and Barge Company since he left the navy, is the new engineer on the "No. 1." Borge Laurentsen, shore engineer for Ky-uquot Co-op, was on board to keep his finger on the pulse of the new machine. Clem Philipson is relieving Big Albert as skipper on the "Cooperator IV" while Big Albert takes time off to visit his home country.
Jim Law is buying springs here in the mouth of Barkley Sound and is doing alright. The price of mild cure is up to 31 cents a pound, which is a good price for camp fish. Gallagher on the "Angler" just arrived fresh from ^own and he Bays he's going up on the ways to take his fancy four-bladed wheel off as he says it whines at trolling speed, but really cuts the mustard at travelling speed.
We haven't had a chance to really try the new diesel on the "Val-jim" but she seems to cut the mustard at full speed and seemed good at trolling speed, but it will take time to tell.

of pro-Nazi propaganda under his Congressional frank.
Not reported by McCarthy on April 13, when he used almost two whole pages of the Record to reprint an Upton Close message, is that Close openly announced he had embraced anti-Semitism, and was publicly welcomed into the i anti-Semitic camp by Gerald L. K. Smith and the 26 who were once on trial for conspiracy to commit sedition.
Fascism and fascist fellow-traveling are today honored in Congress. Throughout its 16 years of history the Un-American Committee has refused to investigate fascism, reaction, or the activities of the extreme right, while devoting all its energies to attacking not only com munism, but anti-fascists of all parties, including liberal organizations which fought fascism in Spain and elsewhere. —In Fact.
Another Attack On Seamen
MONTREAL: Trade union locals across Canada, both CCL and TLC affiliates, are being urged by the Canadian Seamen's Union to take action to compel the federal government to enforce its own labor laws.
In a letter to the labor movement, CSU president Harry Davis warns that failure of the federal government to prosecute the Pat-erson Steamship Company for flagrant violation of the federal labor code threatens the entire structure of collective bargaining.
The steamship company, controlled by Senator Paterson, a top-ranking Liberal, has violated the code by:
(a) Refusing to negotiate with the CSU which is the legal bargaining agent for the company's employees;
(b) Signing back-door agreements with company unions who do not represent the employees and hold no legal bargaining rights for the employees;
(c) Coercing and intimidating seamen into joining the Seafarers' International Union by threatening loss of jobs.
The Company, in the effort to replace the legal CSU with a company-dominated union, has fired and blacklisted many seamen because of their support of the CSU. So flagrant have the labor code violations been that even the Tory
Toronto Telegram was compelled to recognize the company's activities as illegal.
In a protest to federal labor minister Humphrey Mitchell, the CSU revealed that the immediate result of the attempt to supplant the CSU with the SIU has been an increase in working hours from 48 to 56 and a reduction in crew members on all Paterson vessels. The SIU, backed by the company, is also compelling seamen to agree to checkoff of $33 from their first month's wages in order to cover so-called dues and initiation fees.
"Clearly," said CSU president Harry Davis, "this is a situation which neither the labor movement
or the government can afford to permit. Nor does the CSU intend to permit this action, which not only deprives- the seamen of the# democratic right to belong to a union of their own choice, but which is also an attack on the eight-hour day which was fought for and won in 1946."

This Makes
Sense-Doesn't It?
When you purchase a food product, you expect it to be tops in quality. If it isn't, you don't buy that product again.
People abroad, and at home, fee] the same way about Canadian fish products. They expect superior quality at all times.
On their goodwill . . . their steady purchases . . . depends the prosperity of the industry . . . your prosperity. That's why it's so sensible for you and everyone else in the fisheries industry to help keep quality up . . . constantly.
