COMMENTARY FROM PRINCE RUPERT
BY R. L. GARDINER
Secretary, Prince Rupert Shorworkers' Local
The last period of time has passed rapidly here in the north with a series of meetings and events
following one upon the other in quick succession making it difficult to report on any single happen-
ing, rather, it would seem a commentary on the whole would be more in order.
One of the major happenings i-——--—-—~-7
' say that one cannot change of
in the Union of course, was the referendum ballot on our top officers and the writer offers his congratulations to the successful candidates, especially in view of the type of campaign that was carried out in support of the opposition candidates.
Whether the candidates in question actually solicited that type of support may be open to question but nevertheless one way or the, other it does not change the picture — radio broadcasts, special issues of papers (Marpole Times), leaflets. Much of this material was distributed through channels outside the Union. For instance, distributions in company plants by company officials, literature to the Deep Sea Fishermen's Union in Prince Rupert who had the good sense, incidentally, not to distribute it.
There can be only one answer: some group outside the Union was attempting to place themselves in a position to dominate the Union. It has happily failed but the members must remain on guard in the future against this thing and the next convention must make definite rules as to what limits will be placed on candidates campaigning in elections from now on.
By these statements, I do not

Buck Suzuki Sunbury Head
Buck Suzuki was elected president of the Sunbury Local at the April meeting while V. "Bill" Heikkila was re-elected to the position of secretary treasurer of the large Fraser River Local.
Named vice president of the Local was Ernie Alton and R. P. Iverson was elected sergeant-at-arms.
Ernie Alton, V. Heikkila, R. P. Iverson, William Mackie, Jack Goto, and H. Onotera were named delegates to last week's price and gear conferences.
fleers or oppose those in office. I am sincere in my belief any member who meets constitutional requirements should have the right to run for office and even encouraged to run in the same manner any member should and must have the right to criticise his officers.
PROVINCIAL ELECTION
Not the least important question in the next short time is the coming provincial election and already promises are flying thick and fast from the various parties and candidates.
Even as the writer of this article pounds the typewriter keys, a certain well known cabinet minister is pouring his own praises (over the radio of course) into my ear.
I do not wish to sound cynical at this juncture, however, because political action is being forced upon the Union and our members; yes, and Locals must or should give careful consideration to all candidates and parties in their ridings and should not hesitate to try and extract some straight answers on problems facing the fishing industry or labor in general.
The Rupert Locals, in collaboration with the Pulp & Sulphite
mi
Workers Local 708, are organizing a symposium to which all candidates in this riding have been invited. We are hopeful it will be as successful as the one we held during the last provincial election.
WAGE TALKS SLOW
Negotiations seem to be moving very slowly this year regardless of the companies' statement that they wished an early and amicable settlement. Certainly at the one negotiating meeting held here (Rupert) the company representatives seemed reluctant to discuss any specific proposals but rather seemed only willing to dis cuss things in general and played heavily on the market situation.
The shoreworkers are hopeful, however, that they will have some definite proposals soon. PRESS SITUATION
It amuses but sometimes angers me the way certain of the daily papers try to report news pleasing to their own personal views even if it means they have to make incorrect statements or at least color reports to their own advantage.

PRICES
chums which are not canned Would be paid into a pool. At the end of the season, all salmon net fishermen would receive an adjustment or further payment depending on the over-all percentage sold in fresh, frozen or filleted form.
The conference decided to request a fall chum price of 9c lb in the Johnstone Straits and Fraser River area and 8c per tb. elsewhere. This price could be reopened by either party.
In case of such reopening, any new price mutually agreed upon would be retroactive to the date written notice was given of intention to reopen. This would be the same type of clause as contained in the 1951 salmon price agreement covering fall chums. Delegates felt that both parties would have adequate protection under such an arrangement and that it would help to avoid mid-season strife. JUNE 15 DEADLINE
All local opinions were strongly in favor of an early deadline for the settlement of the agreement. The conference decided on June 15 as the date by which the salmon price agreement must be finalised. After full discussion, the conference decided to fully back up the salmon seiners' demand for re-institution of the nine test weigh boats for the weighing of seine caught pinks and chums. This condition was established by action of the salmon seiners in 1951 but was reluctantly given up last year when the operators refused to budge from their position of "no more weigh boats." All delegates, including those representing gillnet members, voiced the opinions that there was every justification for the seiners' demand.
Annieville Elects Officers
John Norum has been elected president of the Annieville Local of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union and Lavergne Phillips secretary for the coming 12 months.
Vice president named by the Local's April 26 membership meeting was P. Stokkeland and Karl Knutsen was elected sergeant-at-arms. Organizers chosen were G. DeVries and R. Nustad.
Elected delegates to the Fraser River District Council were L. Phillips and H. Christiansen.
A large social committee whose initial effort proved to be an outstanding success was also elected at the meeting. Members are S. Henshaw, Olaf Wick, K. Stegavick, A. Mackie, L. Larsen, T. Vestad, L. Landi, J. Norum, P. Stokkeland and R. Nustad.
