• Significance of this photo of Peurto Rican actress Rita Morena is that she is wearing a union-made bathing suit. We wouldn't have published the photo if she'd been without one. (We'd have kept it locked in the office safe.) Rita made a big splash in "The King and I," incidentally.

Columbia River Regulation Changes Set
Closure of Columbia River commercial fishing above Bonneville dam was to become official upon filing of published copies of the 1957 Columbia River commercial fishing regulations with the Secretary of State's office, according to the Oregon State fisheries director, and that has probably been done by now.
Three other major changes 96 hours, beginning 6 p.m. each from the 1956 Columbia regula- Friday. There will also be an ad-tions were adopted by the Fish1 Commission and the Washington
department of fisheries after a public hearing in Portland in mid-January.
A minimum mesh size of 5V4 inches for gillnets in effect the past two years during the blue-back season .has been dropped. Biologists anticipate a larger return of blueback to the Columbia this year and see no need for continuing the minimum mesh size restriction.
To provide additional protection for coho and chum runs in the Columbia, weekly closures have been increased from 72 to
ditional 11-day closed period from October 18-29.

Primarily at the request of Oregon commercial fishermen, the Fish Commission re-established a maximum length of 250 fathoms for gillnets used in the Columbia. A similar restriction was previously in effect for Washington fishermen.
The Commission also anounced its intention to seek authority to make emergency changes in regulations (Columbia River only) by shortening the two-week period now required for hearings and publication of orders.
The Washington State fisheries director already has authority to adjust commercial fishing regulations on short notice. A similar procedure in Oregon is advocat-ed by the Fish Commission to meet unforeseen shifts in timing or abundance of Columbia salmon runs.

Unofficial Figures Reveal Drop In Japanese Mothership Catc
Unofficial estimates of Japanese salmon catches last year indicate that over 42 million salmon were taken by motherships in the North Pacific compared to more than 50 million in 1955, but the figures are subject to revision.
Catch in the Sea of Okhotsk is reported at 9,370,000 fish, more than four million under the 1955 catch of 13,530,000 salmon of all species.
Thus, according to unofficial figures, last year's mothership take was down by some 12 million salmon from the year before. But Japan's land-based operations showed an overall increase of just under four million fish.
The 1955 mothership figures are official and from the Fisheries Agency of Japan but for 1956 they are unofficial figures taken from the weekly fisheries newspaper Hokkai Suisan (Sept. 15).
In the rest of the cases, however, both for 1955 and 1956, the figures are estimates arrived at on the basis of converting landed weights to numbers of fish in most cases and are therefore not necessarily accurate. In fact, the numbers of pinks and chums caught by land-based gear other than gillnets is purely a guess based on general information and certain figures on catches prior to completion of the season.

NOTE: In the 1955 and 1956 land-based catches, there are several points to note. Pink catches in both years include small quantities of oncorynchus masu while chum catches include small amounts of other salmon. In addition, the 26,900,000 pink catch of 1956 reported for land-based offshore gillnets includes about two million pink salmon caught by gillnets on the Japan Sea coast of Hokkaido.
