Opening   of  the   Fraser River* between New Westminster andj Mission bridges to commercial fish-i ing  after  September  15, subject only to closure for conservation' reasons, is being restricted to this year to give the fisheries department an opportunity "to check the efficiency of the control."
This is federal fisheries minister J. Angus Mac-Lean's reply to Homer Stevens, secretary of ttfr United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union, who wrote asking for a permanent change in fisheries regulations to allow commercial fishing in the area alter the mid-September date.
Accompanying Stevens' letter was a petition signed by 282 fishermen and other residents of the area urging that the change, in effect only for this year, be made permanent.
Stevens pointed out that by limiting the order to the current year, the UFAWU and fishermen affected were compelled to make annual representation to the department.
"I note you are now aware that the regulation has been amended to permit salmon fishing in this area by means of nets after September 15 for the current year under the usual restriction that the area director may prohibit such fishing in the event 'that it is deemed necessary for conservation," MacLean says in his reply to Stevens.
"I also appreciate the fact that you feel the change should ,be made permanently.
"As you are aware, a similar change was put into force in 1953 (in the assumption that my department might have an opportunity to check the efficiency of the control being carried out in a normal manner.
"Unfortunately, due to the behavior of the various salmon runs ;-.nd the complications imposed by the heavy Adams River sockeye escapement, it was not possible to come up with a decisive answer.
We therefore felt that the control should remain for this year only in order that we may investigate further.
"I can assure you I appreciate the fact that you may consider this somewhat unsatisfactory in that you might again have to make representations for consideration. On the other hand, it seems to me wise to lift the restriction on a yearly basis until we are convinced that it should either remain permanently or be removed."

Fishermen's Youth Chorus Starts Fall Rehearsals
Would you like your boy or girl to have the chance to learn how to sing in a choir — a labor youth choir — to learn folksongs of Canada and many lands, and songs of labor?
Women's Auxiliary urges yon to ask him or her to come down to the Union hall on Sunday afternoons at 2, for the rehearsals of the Fishermen's Youth Chorus.
After a highly promising first season last year, including performances at the Christmas program, the Union convention, and the Ballet Class Annual Show, the FYC meets for the first time this fall on September 20, and will resume at once the program of folk and topical songs it began late last spring.
Rehearasls are generally a lot of fun, and a sing-session around the piano at the beginning is a good antidote to the radio diet kids live on these days. There are also solo opportunities. Anyone and his friend, aged 10 to 19, is welcome; boys especially needed, as usual. •
The Youth Chorus is directed by Roy Lowther of the Kay Rankin Folk Choirs Committee, co-sponsors; Carrie Ironside of the WA is organiser, phone HA. 0034-R. If you have youngsters in the 10-19 age group, PLEASE ask they to come.
Pioneer Cannery Man Dies
Henry Beathil Bell-Irving, son of the late H. O. Bell-Irving, who headed Angli - British Columbia Packing Company at the time of the Fraser River fishermen's strikes of 1900-01, and himself a former cannery operations manager for that company, died in Vancouver lats week at the age of 72.
Believed to be the first white child born in Vancouver after the fire of 1886, Henry Bell-Irving was widely known in the fishing industry as former cannery operations manager first for Anglo-British Columbia Packing Company and then for Canadian Fishing Company.
A naval veteran of both world wars and holder of two Distinguished Service Crosses, he was also an expert pilot with an intimate knowledge of BC waters.
Annieville WA Meets, Plans Social Events
Tentative plans for social events were made at the monthly meeting of the Annieville Women's Auxiliary with other details to be announced when arrangements are completed.

draw. October meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Thelma Remmem on Sande Road.
The Annieville Playground group w ill hold, a bazaar in aid of the Playground on October 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Annieville School.

are rejoicing ever the arrival of a new baby daughter who was born August 12 — her name is Karen.
Mr. and Mrs. H. Dyrndahl have also been blessed with the arrival of a new baby daughter. She was lorn September 12.
Mr. and Mrs. A. Mikelson and daughter Jean are on a trip to Norway. They will visit many of their relatives during the stay. *     * * The Women's Auxiliary Council meeting will be held October 10 at 10:30 a.m. in the Fishermen's   Hall.   All   delegates are urged to attend.
