Two Forms of US Domination
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4
Columbia Sellout Steel Raids Linked
Two f >rms of US domination the sellout of Columbia River power resources to the US and the Steelworkers' raids on organised'. workers in the metalliferous mining industry — came under fire ! from delegates to Mine Mill's thir-, teenth annual convention at Sud- j bury last month.
The convention unanimously! adopted a resolution calling for Canadian development of Colum- I bia power after hearing a taped address by H. W. Herridge, New i Democratic MP lor Kootenay West, charging that the present treaty "Surrenders control of the Columbia River basin to US authorities."
Herridge, who was unable to attend the convention because of provincial election commitments in BC, warned delegates:
"If this and succeeding generations of Canadians are to enjoy the advantages- they possess in vast natural resources, they must work together to the end that these resources will be owned and controlled by Canadians."
In an unmistakeable reference to proposed Steel raids on Mine Mill
in BC, Herridge declared, "Let me say that anyone who attempts to divide the workers in the mines and smelters of the Kootenays will receive a hot reception and a rude awakening."
DECISION MADE IN US
National president Ken Smith, in his report to the convention, charged that no resident of Canada had anything to say in the decision to give the checkoff in International Nickel's Sudbury operations to the United Steelworkers of America.
"This decision was made south of the border by people in the United States who want to have unions controlled from the top and so keep Canadian workers under their control," he asserted.
Delegates gave a standing ovation to Art Laverty, Hamilton steel-; worker, for his bold condemnation j of Steel raiding.
RAIDS AID EMPLOYERS
"Some peopie may not think it 1 nice of me to speak of my own ' Union this way, but in the inter-! ests of telling the truth and ending the terrible policies of raiding, I feel I must speak out," he said.

He pointed out that although the big Sydney. NS, Steelworkers' Local had sent a resolution condemning raiding to the Steelworkers' Sault Ste. Marie conference last summer, the Local's delegates had sat silent when it came to the floor.
"The delegates were handpicked supporters of William Mahoney and other top officers," he said.
Not surprisingly, he added, the conference had endorsed a resolution calling for further raids. But the resolution did not come from the floor — it was .introduced by the Steelworkers' leadership.
French Try Export Plan
In a campaign to increase exports, French shipyards, fish processors and fishing industry suppliers have established an organisation to study means of developing the fishing industry in underdeveloped countries.
The South Korean government has already concluded an agreement under which French and Italian shipyards will build a large fleet of fishing vessels for an expanded South Korean industry.
The agreement calls for French yards and suppliers to deliver 142 fishing vessels, 120 diesel engines and various fishing equipment.
French technicians will also help in developing fish processing and marketing in South Korea.
'ROYAL CITY'
The convention adopted a section of its officers report setting out its stand on unity and exposing union raiding as serving only the ^employers' interests.
■The workers of the metal mining industry of Canada need a union of their own in which to unite," it stated. "This has been the objective of the Mine Mill Union in Canada since we were founded and it is our clear intention to continue to fight for it.
"We are willing to cooperate with anyone who has the objective of a democratic autonomous Cana-dian union in the metal mining industry. If this were the case, their power could be exerted at the bargaining table and on legislative, social and political matters, and would cause the employers of the metal mining industry to literally shake in their boots.
'But essentially, that is the reason we have been divided. The I only way in which the employers j can perpetuate their despotic control over the lives of the workers is to perpetuate the policy of raiding and division."
In a decision described by Smith as designed "to bring the Union to : top fighting trim in winning great-I er gains for the membership, even in face of the wild and irrespon-| sible continuation of raids by the I Steelworkers," the convention voted ■ to eliminate district union officers and centralise direction of the Union's affairs under one central j Canadian executive board.
Ken Smith was unanimously re-I turned as national president and William Longridge as national secretary.
has the advantage of being able to convert to fishing almost any rig, but her refrigeration system enables her range farther and remain at sea longer than any comparable vessel.
CREW ACCOMMODATION
Her crew accommodations, like those of the Milbanke Sound, are as modern as the materials used in them — birch panelling and mahogany trim, foam upholstered mess furnishings, refrigerators and stainless steel sinks, wash basins and showers.
In addition to the captain's quarters in the wheelhouse, the Royal City has two three man staterooms and one two man stateroom and separate engineer's quarters on the main deck.
Most of the marine hardware and ' some other furnishings for the vessel were supplied by Bilmae Marine Supply.

Canadian Marconi supplied the Apelco radio direction finder, Sim-rad white line recorder and Marconi LN 35A radar, and Sounder Sales supplied an Ekolite ER9B recorder and two APN4 Loran sets.
The Royal City also has intercom equipment, supplied by Associated Dynamics Ltd., throughout the vessel, with stations both inside and out.
Thompson Moves To New Location
William Thomson Ltd., sole BC distributor for Pyrene Fire Extinguishers, has moved into new offices and plant at 1934 Franklin Street.
Steady growth in business and need for more space to accommodate new plant equipment was the reason for the move, Thomson said. He also reported that the firm had installed a 2% ton liquid flow carbon-dioxide system — the only one of its kind in the pro-vincce — for the fast filling of CO-2 extinguishers.
