Herring sells for $7 a bucket, with the proceeds going jointly to the CKNW Orphan's Fund and the T. Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation.
The first herring sale this year was on Nov. 20. Ross Aleksich and the crew of the Royal Bounty caught the herring while Tom Hill and the crew of the packer Hes-quiat brought it in. UFAWU seine boat organizer and one of the coordinators of the sale Bruce Logan points out the extra effort both fishing and packer crews put in to make the herring sales a success.
"There's a real sense of community there," he says. "Everybody is working at what they know how to do best for a cause they believe in."
Many union members and even former fishermen volunteer to do the work at the herring sale, bagging and handling the fish.
The last Lower Mainland sales was on Dec. 4 in Steve-ston and Vancouver. Sales are also held in Pender Harbour, Gibson's and Nanaimo.
Russel Arnet and the crew of the Camaano Sound caught the herring for the Dec. 4 sale. A fleet of packers was on hand to pack he fish in to the various sales, with Rob Brock running the Hesquiat for the Vancouver sale. Brad Nelson and the crew of the Koprino packed the herring to Steve-ston, Garth Mirau the Ocean Mistress to Nanaimo, and Frank Muryn the Ocean Twilight in to Pender Harbour.
The UFAWU portion of the sale proceeds once went to the Bill Rigby Memorial Society, the organization which built the Bill Rigby Manor, a senior's home in Steveston. The T. Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation now gets half the herring sale money.
The Suzuki Foundation, named after early union environmental activist Buck Suzuki, is a non-profit society dedicated to preserving fish habitat and water quality in B.C.
"At the Suzuki Foundation we are inspired by the dedication of all the volunteers that make the herring sales such a success," says foundation director Mae Burrows.
The CKNW Orphan's Fund donates money to a variety of causes.
This year's New Westminster, Steveston and Vancouver sales brought in over $50,000 this year.
