Death Takes Frank Lacey
Funeral services were held at Ladner on January 11 for Frank Lacey of Cloverdale, cannery maintenance man at Colonial plant in Steveston, who died on January 9 at the age of 57 years.
Born in Ladner, Frank Lacey had a record of service with Nelson Bros, going gack to 1935 when he first started work at Colonial plant. He was employed there in 1945 when he joined the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union, of whose Steveston Shore-workers Local he was a member at the time of his death.
His first wife died in 1962 and he had remarried only three weeks before his death.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; one son, George, a tender-man for Nelson Bros, and also a UFAWU member; one daughter, Mrs. J. T. Funfer; three grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Viola Read.

tary facilities, paint living accommodation and install a lounge in the bunkhouse, converting rooms 11 and 12 to this purpose.
Boat crews will receive an increase in monthly wage rates amounting to $25 for chief engineers, mates and second engineers; and $15 for cooks, deckhands, firemen and oilers.
SHARE REVISION
Management also agreed to the Union's proposal for a revision in the bonus pool share schedule which will reduce chief engineers' shares from 15 to 11; mates' shares from 15 to 10; and second engineers' shares from 10 to nine.
Cooks', dockhands', firemen's and oilers' shares will be increased from seven to 8Vi. Based on the 1965 season, the latter classifications would receive a seasonal increase of roughly $120.
Classifications whose shares were reduced will be compensated for earnings lost by a further increase in monthly rates. Based on the 1964 season, the amounts proposed, and agreed to, are: chief engineers, $65; mates, $80; second engineers, $16. Cooks, deckhands and other categories probably will receive a greater seasonal increase in earnings from this proposal than engineers and

mates, but their earnings will, to a large extent, continue to rely on the whale catch.
Mates and engineers, through higher monthly rates, will be assured of a portion of earnings, particularly if the whale catch declines.
If 1966 whale catches approximate those of 1965, deck crews will receive seasonal increases amounting to $210 and engineers and mates a net increase of $150, or $35 and $25 a month respectively.
Proposals for painting crews' quarters, providing well stocked first aid kits, adequate bedding supplies and improved mail deliveries were discussed and will be acted upon, but to what extent will be determined by the crews themselves in enforcing the agreement.
MEETING PLANNED
If possible, a meeting of boat crews will be held in Vancouver prior to sailing to complete Union clearance, discuss changes in the agreement and elect boat delegates. Management has agreed to cooperate by relieving crew members to attend.
Western Canada Whaling processed 880 whales in 1964 and 849 whales in 1965, two of the highest totals on record for the BC operation. Prospects are for similar catches to be attained, at least for the next few years, barring major breakdowns in catcher boats or prolonged adverse weather.
John Harbick, Seiner, Dead
By the death of John Harbick on December 30 the Vancouver seine fleet has lost another of the veterans who fished throughout the thirties and brought union organisation to the fleet through the old Salmon Purse Seiners Union.
John Harbick, who was 62 years of age, entered the fishing industry in 1929 when he came to this province from Yugoslavia, working as a crew member on salmon seiners for 20 years.
In 1949 he started fishing herring, first with ABC P*59Dfc< &nd then with Canadian Fishing Company. Among his boats were the Reel Fisher, on which he was a crew member from 1950 to 1954, and the Merry Chase, on which he fished with Tony Kirincich in 1956, 1957 and 1959.
A staunch unionist, he joined the old Salmon Purse Seiners Union in 1937 and entered the United Fishermen and Allied Workers, of whose Vancouver Fishermen's Local he was a member, on its formation in 1945.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie; one son, John; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Jackson and Mrs. Rose Marie Gatto; one brother and two sisters.
