Veteran Halibut Man Bill Hussey Passes
A fisherman whose career in the BC fishing industry went back more than 60 years passed away August 5 in Vancouver following two years of hospitalisation.
He was 82 year old William (Bill) Warren Hussey, who started fishing halibut off the British Columbia coast in the days of the dory carrying steamers.
Born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Hussey came to British Columbia around the turn of the century. He fished halibut throughout his many years prior to retirement, working ashore during the winters at Vancouver Ice and Cold Storage.
He fished with the late Robert (Bob) Hobbs and was with him on the trip when Hobbs was stricken with a heart attack and fell off the Western Fisher in Vancouver Harbor. Hussey made a grab for him before he went down.
He was out with veteran Joe Babcock on the Annie Tuck, and that was believed to be the last time Hussey fished halibut.
He was a very old member of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union and its predecessors, holding Union book number 22 and an honorary membership in the organisation, last paying dues in 1959, the final year in which he apparently fished.

Hussey was found in the washroom of the Astoria Hotel one day about two years ago with indications he had been beaten and robbed.
He showed signs of recovery but while in hospital, doctors discovered he had diabetes and other ailments and about a year ago, his condition began to deteriorate until his death last week.
Private funeral services were held in Vancouver, arranged that way to accommodate the family, who have expressed their regrets that this was necessary to the large number of his friends who would have attended the funeral.
Services were followed by cremation and his son Ralph, who lives in Victoria, said his ashes will be spread on the waters of Burrard Inlet near the Lions Gate Bridge under which he sailed many times for the fishing grounds.
Surviving are two sons, Harold in Vancouver and Ralph in Victoria; three daughters, Mrs. Violet Dunbar, Bralorne, Mrs. Ermine Colquhoun, Burnaby, and Mrs. Grace Fletcher, New York. Seven grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren also survive.
HERRING MEAL PRICE RAISED
Herring meal has climbed $3.50 per ton in the past couple of weeks, bringing current prices in the Seattle market to $189 in US funds FOB Vancouver.
The market is described as firm with demand good.
Oil remains at 10.5 cents per pound with sales restricted to the Canadian market and the price quoted in Canadian funds. The market is steady and demand is also good.

Douglas Sees Drift To Third World War
National NDP leader T. C. Douglas again emphasised his party's opposition to US actions in Vietnam at a press conference in Vancouver last week.
"The American action in Vietnam is legally indefensible and morally inexcusable," he declared. "Repeated escalation will widen the war into a catastrophe. At best it will alienate the white man from Orientals for generations. We are drifting closer and closer to a world war."
The NDP supports UN secretary U Thant's proposals for ending the war, said Douglas, as he called for cessation of the bombing, reduction of military activity by both sides, a peace conference including the National Liberation

Travelling Canneries Face Dept Crackdown
The federal fisheries department, in its July 31 sport fish bulletin, says it is looking toward adoption of legislation that will prevent the continuation o f abuses by socalled sport fishermen who are having their salmon canned for sale.
The bulletin, under the heading, Crackdown in Sight for Travelling Salmon Canneries, described the incident leading up to its proposal for legislation in these words:
"We received a phone call just this last Tuesday from an angry woman who had witnessed a tourist operated sport fish cannery in the Campbell River area. She was appalled by what she saw.
"By virtue of her 'foreign' accent, which she retained after moving to BC, she was mistakenly identified as a fellow traveller by a visiting group of sport fishermen and was invited into one of the trailers to view their canning operation.
"She was led to understand that several 'sport' boats were operating to supply the cannery, and

that much of the catch would be sold on the return trip to cover the costs of the vacation, with, perhaps, a little profit left over as an added bonus.
"She reported that the canned pack had reached wholesale proportions at the time of her inspection with no sign yet that the group was preparing to head back home.
"The department (of fisheries) has been aware that such abuses have been committed all too frequently in the past, and we agree that the time has come to bring this type of practice to a halt.
"By far the majority of our visiting sport fishermen are a credit to their communities and are the type of people we would welcome back each year. But this kind of fish hog we can do without.
"The BC Wildlife Act pertaining to non-tidal sport fishing states that 'No person shall, anywhere in the province, process by canning or bottling any game or trout until said game or trout has been taken to the residence of the angler or hunter as shown on his licence . . .'
"We do not, of course, require a licence for fishing in tidal waters; however, we are looking toward adopting legislation, perhaps similar to that described above, to prevent the continuation of this abuse of the sport fishing resource."

Front and the phased withdrawal of foreign troops.
The NDP leader proposed the establishment of a "peace keeping force" by the UN or the Geneva powers, pending free elections to decide the issue of unification of the country.
"The first step must be de-escalation of military activity," he said. "Canada should align itself with U Thant for cessation of bombing."
He said he would welcome a fact finding trip to Vietnam under neutral auspices.
WAGE HIKES DEFENDED
Dealing with labor problems, Douglas stressed that wage increases are not responsible for rising prices. He pointed out that the NDP had warned the government for the last two years that labor unrest and strikes are inevitable if the cost of living skyrockets.
"Wage increases do not push up prices,' 'he said. "The opposite is true. Wages must keep pace with the rising cost of living and increased productivity.
"Labor costs per unit of production dropped 11.3 percent be-1960-63."
In 1965, he said, wages went up 5.2 percent but profits after taxes went up 13.5 percent.
In 1964, wages and salaries went up eight percent while company profits after taxes rose by 14.6 percent.
"We must find some way to solve the problem of redistribution of the national income," he said, adding that any "across the board regulation of wages and prices should include profits."
LEFT, RIGHT PARTIES
Douglas predicted that eventually Canada will have only two political parties, one of the left and the other of the right.
If times are bad enough, the right wing group may become semi-fascist, he said, as he labelled the new formed right wing group of businessmen, the National Public Affairs Research Foundation, the potential "John Birchers of Canada."
"The old party structures are breaking down," said Douglas. "The left wing of the Liberals and Conservatives, whatever there is of them, will gravitate to a party with us. The right wing of both and Social Credit will also join together."
NDP gains will act as a catalyst in this process, he said.
