The Adath Israel Congregation's men's Softball team was recently crowned champions of the Conservative Synagogue Baseball League.
Falling behind 11-3 to .Beth Tikvah afLer only two innings, they scratchai and clawed their way to a 17-13 championship game win.
Bouyed by aggressive base running and some key double plays that snuffed out Beth Tikvah efforts to pad their early lead, Adath Israel rallied to tie the game in the eighth inning, said Mike Fogel, who doubled as catcher and "rover" for Adath Israel.
In the ninthV Adath exploded for four runs and
hung on to capture the league's championship for the second year in a row. Beth tzedec won the league title in its inaugural season / three years ago.
This time around, Adath Israel had to get by Holy Blossom Temple (23-7) in the quarterfinals and Beth ShOlom (16-7) in the semis to get to the championship game:
While winning the title was certainly satisfying, it was the "winning spirit" of league play that made the season worthwhile, said Fogel. Unlike other Jewish Softball leagues which he called "too stressful,'' in the synagogue league "all you need is a winning spirit
and hustle but there. Our motto is to have fun."
As if to illustrated that credo, there are no umpires officiating at the games and disputes are handled by alternating the final say on a close calls. Team A would make the call on the first disputed play, Team B oh the second, and so on.
In all, about 225 men, mostly in their 30s and 40s (and a few in their 50s) participated in the 15-team league. Twelve Conserv-
ative and Reform synagogues were represented, with three shuls sporting two teams. Anyone who was a member of ;a synagogue brotherhood was eligible to play, Foge;l said.
But the league doesift stress winning, Fogel said. Everyone gets to bat regardless of the score or game situation. Having a good time with the fellows from the brotherhood is the main attraction ; of the league. :
