Bv
JAMES MONTAGNES
FORT LAUDERDALE,
.Fla..-, yt There is more to this southeastern Florida area than relaxing in the sun on wide sand beaches. Here the fishing is gotxi all year, and especially when Canadians come here to escape the cold weather of home. And you can enjoy the local sightseeing from cruisers or yachts on theinlaiid waterway which extends from northern cities to this semi-tropical region,
Deep-sea and freshwater fishing are yeai--round pursuits in this area and you need riot bring your own boat, you can rent boats or share a charter boat with other fishermen from , oceanfront piers for a day' s deep-sea fishing sport.
If you have never tasted the thrill of hauling in a big fish from the Atlantic, try a "party boat" - with others and head for reefs about two miles pff shore. You'll have a chance at snapper, grouper, tarpon Or kingfish. The boats go out for four-hour excursions, ^nd for about $20 per person, not only. do you get shown how'tOJbandle the fuhing gear, but fishing tackle and bait are included in the fee.
Or you can try for bigger *^tTshc)n charter boats ^ operate from marines and yacht''''clubs in the region, and go for saiifish; dolphin,.' wahbo., tuna, kingfish or: marlin.
You need not go out to sea to catch' fish" in This" Florida area. You can drop a line from Iqw bridges along the banks of the In-
. tracoastal Waterway of from a number of piers and
_wharves in the area, the longest of which at Pompano Beach extends 330 metres into the ocean. The catch can be bluefish, snapper, amberjack, mackerel or
• pompano; Fees vary but are under $5, and you can even
rent a rod and reel.
The inland waterways of this Fort LauderdalcTegion teem with largemouth bass.. You can rent flat-bottomed boats at various marinas along this area and even tackle. Fees range up to about $35 for a boat seating four persons for up to five hours, and tackle and bait are extra; Even half-day guided freshwater fishing trips are available.
mansions
If you have ever taken a boat trip on the Indian Riyer waterway in the Miami airea, you will have an idea of what there is to see aldng the Intracoastal Waterway which stretches north from Miami. You'll not only pass by stately mansions of the rich and hot-so-rich on islands and along once swampy shores, but you'll see a wide variety of boats from powerboats to Juxury yachts., . '
In the Fort Lauderdale area there are some 265 kilometres of inland waterways navigable to pleasure craft. You can travel from. Deerfield .Beach, south of Palm Beach, to Hallandale, the
start of Miami Beach. It can becovered in an afternoon for several days, stopping_.off at well-known dining and drinking spots.
Besides the restaurants enroute, there are interesting sights tosee. At Hills-boro Inlet is a lighthouse built in 1907. which stands 40 metres (130 feet) high, and tasts one of the most powerful beams on this section of the Atlantic coast. Much of the way isJined today with highrise apartment and hotel buildings, mostly for winter visitors, as well as Spanish-style mansions and marinas.
As a side trip you can cruise the New River in the Fort Lauderdale area. It meanders through the heart of Fort Lauderdale and adjacent residential areas. You can spend an afternoon following the river inland, about 11 kilometrisstbhook up with the Dania Cutoff Cianal and complete the loop back to the Intracoastal Waterway. :
Fort Lauderdale is bracketed by two state parks, oh the eastern shore of the In-tracbastal Waterway — Hugh Taylor-Birch State Park, and John U. Lloyd State Park, south of Port Everglades. Though much bf it is too shallow to navigate at times, the ngrth end of Whiskey Creek is a popular place to - beach srnall bbats for swirnming and picnicing.. ■ ■
