The Liquor Control Board of Ontario store at 221 Wilmington Ave. is: carrying several different varieties of kosher wines that aren't available anywhere else in the province, said assistant manager Jeff Jacobs.
Through special arrangements undci^a government-run plan, the store has obtained permission to carry this unique kosher stock. = The varied list includes:,' Chateau Richon from Is" rael;-Alsace Riesling, Vin De Pays Red, Chateau Gramet Red and Minervois Red from France; and Che-nin Blanc Sweet, Weih-stock Chardonnay and Gewartztraminer from the United States. " Other products the store carries are subject to ayailability are: Israeli Chenin Blanc, Israeli Cabernet Sauvignon, . Chateau Charmes Villard Noir, Kadman Dessert Wine and Brandy 100.
As well, this location also carries some beer and, wTries'tha'f are' available even though the LCBO does not distribute them. • "This location hals always been designated kosher due tg_the area," said manager Dick Bailey. •
He said the store has existed for the past 20 years, ' and he has been working as the manager for the past three. Bailey^ who has been with the LCBO for_ about 19 years, has worked in as many as eight differ-: ^rit locations. ; ^: Jacobs has worked with the board for close to 10 years, in about five stores.
To both nhen, the special arrangement with the LCBO provides a needed service within the com; . munity.

A wide variety of kosher wines are available.
Jews who are of various ethnic backgrounds. We carry products that cater to spa:ific backgrounds called vintage listings. For example, we carry a Russian
brandy which is bought by Russian Jews and Hungarian products for the Hungarian Jews. These are also carried by other stores but we want people to know they are available here along with our other kosher stock," Jacobs said.
He continued to explained that kosher wines are not less accessible than > non-kosher products, but he said, thereTare simply not enough Jews to support the number of brands that are available.
"We are a sihqll segment — a'minority — so: the consumer base really isn't there to support the amount and the number of wines the government could bring in,'' he said.
As a result, the LCBO brings in what they teriii one-shot listings, these products are -basically designed to test the market so the store managers will know what kosher wines are receiving the most
favorable consumer re-
sponse.
The prices of the kosher wines are comparable to other imported non-kosher alcohol and wines., The wines are availiable in white, red and rose."
Jacobs said one of the problems that occurs when selling kosher products are: complaints concerning handling. For instance.
although it doesn't happen often, Jacobs said that some people believe that if a non-Jew touched the bottle, it isn't kosher anymore. He said this is not true.
Currently, Bailey and Jacobs are expecting five new wines from Israel, but they aren't sure when they will actually be available in the store.
