About 2,500^ears ago, a merchant ship, sailed eastern Mediterranean trade routes until it met its iend off the coast of.the present-day Kibbutz Ma'a-gan Michael.
Dr. Elisha Linder, head of an international team of marine archeo-logists now completing excavations of the wreck, said the reason the ship sank so close to shofere-' mains unknown. But from the direction of the bow, he said, it appeared
the crew might have been trying to beach the relatively large craft — 11.5 metres from stem to stern.
"It may be that the keel, which we uncovered recently and which js.made from a.single piece of carefully selected wood, will provide some evidence of how the ship sank," Linder said. ^ ■ ■

Miracle Meals, Eight Nights of Food 'N Fun for Chanukah. by M. Wilder and J. Groner (Kar-Ben Copies, Inc.) is. according to. the publishers, the first Chanukah cookbook just 'for kids.
^ This is a fun book, witli clieerful iUustrations and simple instructions. It can turn thie eight days of Chanuliah into a time when youngsters develop both a culinary appreciation of this holiday, and enough confidence to become regular helpers in the kitchen.
Besides a colorful selection of recipes for different soups (chicken, minestrone, onion), five kinds of latkes, and other foods (dairy and meat), the book : provides ideas fordifferent types of Chanukah parties: You can haye a Chanukah open house, candlelight dinner, or pajama party — all of which sound like great fun.
For desserts that are appropriately suited to Chanukah, there are a menorah cajce and Cha-nukahcookies. Recipesfor sufganiyot (raspberry-filled " doughnuts), the traditional Israeli Chanukah food, are also given.
To keep the party lively -die book suggest&a number of games, such as variations , on dreidi playing, Chanukah bingo, sufganiyot on-a string, and a Chanukah gelt treasure hunt. AH the games are easy to play, and .should delight children of any age, including the grown ups.
Parents will be pleased with the careful instructions at the beginning of the book, reminding youngsters of safety precautions to be taken in the kitchen.
The recipes are graded as to difficulty with a dreidl-shaped symbol by their side. One dreidi represents a no-cook recipe for preschoolers, where supervision may be minimal. Two dreidls may require some supervision, and three . dreidls calls for-an adult, presence during cooking time.
The book also gives a short summary of the story of Chanukah. the blessings for the candles, and the order in which they are to be lit.
The Chanukah party plans come complete with easy-to-make invitation "ideas; decoration suggestions and menus.
The variety of recipes is such that the book will most likely be used by the child all year.
face. It transpired that the stones, 12 tons in aJl, had been used as ballast for the ship.
The lack of wear on the pine timbe;rs indicates the ship was virtually new when lost and might have been on its maiden voyage.
The excavations, under the' auspices of Haifa University's Centre for Maritime Studies and sponsored by Sir Anthony Jacobs of London, are revealing: a wealth of information about the propulsion, navigation, handling and construction of ancient merchant ships.
"This vessel and the high technology of [its] construction. would undoubtedly be the envy of modern shipwrights." Linder said.
Recent finds have included a whole !»et of carpenters' tools, various ropes of 1 cm. to 5 cms: thickness, and the mast step.
Personal items belonging to the five-member crew, including pottery and the remains of food items were found in the stem of the boat, where it is believed there was a small cabin.
The remains, of the hull, which were preserved by the sand, have been largely removed and disassembled and will be treated at the Haifa University centre, for possible reassembly in four years' time.
When the rest of the excavations are complete, ar-Cheologists will begin the task of trying to discover the ship's home port and retrace the route of itis last fateful joiimey". .The vessel diates from the end of the fifth century BCE and is believed to be of Phoenician
