Support for peace

TORONTO -
A recently released poll of Likud central committee members dashes many popular misconceptions and shows that Israel's ruling party is rela-.tively moderate and committed to the peace process, a meeting of the Canadian Jewish Congress Ontario region executive was told recently.
The poll results, published in the mass circulation d-dWy Yediot Aiiaronot. shows that the majority of the 3.208-member central committee do not identify with hawkish elements, said Prof. Gabriel Ben-Dor. They see disposition of the territoi-ies in security terms, not ideological ones, he said.
Ben-Dor. a political science professor on sabbatical at YoTk-University's Centre for Strategic Studies, said the poll was based on interviews with more than 500 central committee members.
It showed that Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir is fully backed on the peace process (92 percent agree he
Gabriel Ben-Dor
should have gone to Madrid) and that 56 percent believe peace with the Palestinians will be attained. Only 31 percent believe the same prospects pertain to Syria, Ben-Dor said.
Seventy-three percent support autonomy for the Palestinians, five percent would exchange territories for peace and 18 percent want outright annexation of the territories, Ben-Dor said.
One-third of respondents favor a settlement freeze during negotiations while two-thirds oppose it.
Ben-Dor said that while Israel's international legitimacy was recently boosted by the opening of diplomatic relations \yith China and the repeal of the United Nations.resqlytion equating Zionism with racism, important Arab states like Syria and Jordan voted against the repeal.
That leaves open the question whether, even in the midst of peace talks, they truly recognize Israel as a legitimate entity in the region, he said.
Ben-Dor said that despite an "ugly rift" between Israel and the United States and Israel's inability to put its views across to the American public, he was optimistic about the peace process. He said the Palestinian leadership is "running scared." finding itself stuck between Islamic fundamentalists and radical nationalists. They are afraid of missing a la.si chance for a settlement, he added.
In othen reports. Nathan Leipciger. national cRa'lrman of the Holocaust remembrance committee, said a 60-passeng!er tour bus has been obtained to ferry visitors between the main camp at Auschwitz to Birkenau. three kilometres away. It wa.s at Birkenau that an estimated 1.5 million Jews were murdered, he said.
Gerda Frieberg. who chaired a recent community commemoration of the Wanhsee conference, underwrote the costs of the"bus.; he said. The bus will be dedicated in the; memories of Frie-^ berg's father and grandmother as well ■ as the half-mjllion Jewish children killed at the death camp. Leipciger added.
