By RUTHIE
Long ago. I gave up the thought of pining for somethuig where a lot of money is involved. I'm conditioned to the fact that "that? Not for me."
There are things a person can enjoy without having to pay a cent: fresh air; sunshine; sights; rest.
Ah, that all-elusive rest!
* • * * " The other morning I decided,
"Today's the day. As soon as Ned's off to work and the kids are in school, I'm going to indulge, do something that's been haunting me for years — go back to bed. Other people do it so why can't I?"
But that's so foreign to my nature, the thought just made me feel guilty. After all, there are a million things to be done before noon. Like dusting, ironing a pile that's growing awfully fast, shopping, telephoning the girls about the next meeting.
But then—to heck with it for once! The crows feet are getting deeper, I'm looking older by the
minute and anyway what's the rush?
* * *
So it was eight-thirty. I'd already had coffee. 1 made sure the front and side doors were locked. I even toyed with the idea of taking the phone off the hook; lots of people do. But, no. I'd be too curious to know if anyone tried to call.
But I still didn't go back to bed. First I had to do the dishes and leave the kitchen looking respectable. (Mama did a good job raising me.) Then I made the beds. (Suppose something happened to me, God forbid, and people saw a messy room?) Then I made
sure the toothpaste tube was capped.
* * *
Finally I got between the sheets. What a relaxed feeling! But a minute later, I started to become queezy. I couldn't unwind. All the years of following one pattern didn't help loosening my reflexes.
But I forced myself. And, believe it or not, I was just dozing off when I heard the doorbell ring so persistently, it could waken the dead.
Answer it? No. What if I weren't home? But my curiosity was greater.
"Coming!" I got into my robe and ran.
So who was it that was so important? The census taker. You know—how many are in the family and who slept home last night?
And for that I got out of bed?
I made another attempt to sleep. By then, though, I was aware of the sim that seemed to dare me to go back to bed.
I dug my head into the pillow and tried.
* * *
So next it was the telephone. Let it ring? Maybe it was important. I answered.
"Mommy?" my youngest. "What's vwong, hoiiey?"
"Nothing. Only it's recess and I called to tell :^u I'm going to write a book in Hebrew."
I glanced at the clock. Twenty after ten. And for that I had to answer? But how can you not encour!l|e a budding novelist?
"What made you decide?"
"I wrote two sentences and the teacher thinks . they're great. And I want to be famous."
"Fine. Good luck, honey. Tell me all about it when you come home." That was diplomatic.
So could I go back to bed? I guess that's another luxury not meant for me.
