Not longago, Mordechai Look, who ^came famous as the man the Egyptians attempted to kidnap him from Rome to Cairo i in a trunk left the Israeli prison in Ramie.
He was sentenced by an Israeli Court to 10 years in prison for spying for E©rpt and was-released aftier serving only six years diie to his exemplary behaviour. -
His hew occupation has caused a sensation among Israeli artistic circles. He was accepted by the Well-known director, and actor of the Haifa Theatre, Josef Milo, and will soon appear on the stage jn Shimon Israeli's play Joy in the Harbour.
Ixwk worked for six years as manager of the library in the Ramie prison. He also organised a group of prisoners interested in the theatre. They appeared in three plays. One of these was attended by the first lady of the Israeli theatre, Hana Rovina, who was so impressed by Look's acting, that she invited him to join the National Theatre—Habima— after serving his prison sentence.
How did he become ^ entangled with the Egyptian espionage network? One day, 10 years ago, he had a family quarrel. He became very angry and went to a football game at the Ramat Can stadium between Israel and Brazil. He bought a newspaper and saw a picture in it of seven Israelis who had crossed the Egyptian border and were transferred to Europe. This gave him an idea. He crossed the border in Gaza, was arrested and brought to a military prison in Cairo.
It was a horrible time. He was frequently
, man in
beaten up and had to stay inasmaU, narrow cell without sanitary cohditiohs. Three times he tried to commit suicide. His only thoughts cehteredaroundthequestionof how to get out of this hell. When in hospital he asked for a meeting with a high official, he expressed his readiness to go on a missl6n»tp Europe. He Vfas transferred to a villa where he lived under good conditions and passed a course in espionage. After this course he was^sent to Europe by plane.
It was in July 1963^He spent la days in Oermany and afterwards went to Naples. Here he decided to play cat and mouse with the Egyptian espionage service. This lasted for 18 months. He wanted to gain time. The Egyptians asked him to enlist Israelis in Italy and other European centres for their espionage service. He was, according to his statement, unwilling to do anything for them. He lold the Egyptians that he first had to be established in Italy as an Italian citizen with a passport.
In the meantime, he started a private business and sold watches, transistor radios ^ and jewellery in Italian villages. One day he "decided to visit his brother in Paris. The Egyptians warned him that they would kill him if he did not cooperate with them in their espionage work. -We are paying you for 18 months", they said to him. -You are living on our allowances and you do nothing for us".
Fifteen days after Look's return from PariSi the Egyptian intelligence servjce in Italy decided to kidnap him. Look did not know anything about these intentions. As he was leaving the Villa Borghese in Rome, a car Slopped and three men dragged him by force ini 0 the car, which sped in the direction of the
now
Egyptian Embassy. Look felt that this was the end for him.
In the embassy; he was told that he would be sent back to Cairo,to report. Look un-; deristood that if he were sent back to Cairo, he would be lost. .
it was Nov. 16, 1965. He was tired and fell asleep. Suddenly, he realized that the Egyptians had given him an injection. His - hands lied with rope he was put into a big irunk. I^ter he was told by the Italian police thai the Egyptians used such trunks to transfer dead bodies. TherTwas a smell of the graveyard in the trunk. Look_ made a maximum effort to stay awake. He trieB to loosen the rope and succeeded in getting free, but the trunk was sealed. He waited until he heard the roar of planes and was sure that he had been brought to the airport iii order to be transported to Cairo.
When Look felt that he was moved on the escalator at the customs authority, he moved the trunk with all his force and shouted-. •Help, help, murderers, Egyptian diplomats!" He shouted at the top of his voice. The Italian Customs official, very much astonished to hear shouting from the diplomatic trunk, was as pale as a dead man.
A few dreadful moments passed. Suddenly the trunk opened. Look saw himself in an Italian police office. He told his story and asked for political asylum, which was granted 10 him.
He was given a few days time to decide whether he wished to return to his wife and three children in Israel
Ijook is convinced that he had not done any damage to the interests of Israel, but only tc himself. He returned to Israel and awaited his trial.
