Cantor Sheldon Merel
Kashruth questions keep the rabbi busy
By MIRIAM HERMAN TORONtO-
"0 sing unto the Lord a new song" the Psalms proclaim! And every Sunday morning, come rain or come shine, the Holy Blossom Temple Singers do just that!
In fact, they have been singing on Sunday mornings for the past 25 years. What began as a glee club for a small group of men, has grown to a choral society of some 50 men and women that still includes some of the original members. All members of the community are welcome to join their ranks.
Their repertoire runs the musical gamut from traditional Hebrew and Yiddish songs to the classics by Handel and Shubert as well as contemporary works. Right now rehearsals are geared to an April 6 presentation of a Friday evening service with string ensemble. The sermon in song is to be the story of creation as told by
a Negro minister with choir acting as congregation. Also in the offing is a program for the National Council of Jewish Women on- May 9.
The present conductorr; Holy Blossom's Cantor Sheldon Merel, follows-an impressive roster of talented leadership, all of whom have made an imprint on the Toronto musical scene-thelate Emil Gartner, Gordon Kush-ner, Ben Steinberg and Cantor Jacob Barkin.
"I literally inherited a very speciallnstitution."the cantor said. "Most of them cannot read music but through their sheer love of singing have learned to follow the notes and through sufficient repetition are able to sing four-part harmony."
Somewhat bewildered as to what keeps this group coming back each Sunday morning year after year, he added: "Being their director and a professional singer, I naturally see music as a

As Passover approaches, the telephone doesn't stop ringing at the kashruth department of the Canadian Jewish Congress. One woman, who had recently re-styled her kitchen, wanted to know if the counter top would have to be covered during Passover because of the material used in making it.
Everyone knows the high cost of food products during Passover. The most common complaint to this department concerns the price of meat. But, according to Nachmen iShemen, director. Orthodox Division and Rabbinical Vaad Hakashruth, this is a year-rpund complaint, not just one concerning kosher meat.
He feels women often buy certain cuts of meat, despite-the time of the year and the availability of meat, causing them to pay exorbitant prices at times. He believes that when a federal consumer's committee in Ottawa looks into all aspects of kos&er meat and other kosher products, it is very possible the whole picture will be different. Prices might be affected, and certainly laws governing kosher signs will be regulated.
Shemen also points out that this year some companies from the United States have ' arranged to look after supervision here locally, and this makes it easier for Canadian consumers—price-wise as well as creating more jobs for people here.
Shemen notes that Orthodox families who want She-mura matzos for the Passover, but can't affoi;d them (they are about $1.00 a piece) should contact their rabbi or the Lubavitch or Rabbi GedaliaFelder, chairman of Rabbinical Vaad Hakashruth, and the matzos will be provided free. . Shemen's department is also planning another seminar before Passover, under the initiative of the Rabbinr ical Council of America, Ontario Branch. Thesesem-inars are becoming atradi- -tion in Toronto because of their. popularity.
This department has also finished prepa.ring a revised annual and Passover kashruth directory for which people may now ask.

marvellous means of expression demanding complete physical and mental involvement. That is my. view-but what about the Temple singers?"
What indeed! What is it Jhat-brings out these people of varied backgrounds and professions on a -non-working day when most people are catching a few extra hours of sleep? What is it that 'turns average in-the-shower singers into avid music-makers?
It could, be just that they love to sing. It could be the relaxation after a week of tension build-up, the schmoozing at coffee break, or even the excitement of anew challenge.
But it could be that in-
ner "something" thatmoves the spirit and touches the soul-tradition!
As Morley Pape, one of the charter members, put" it: "Always there^as a song in the life of Jewlf. Songs of joy, of sadness, of victory, of mourning,^work, at prayer, and at thecradle. So it is with the temple singers and so it has been for 25 years."
