Milestone ceremonies have relevance,
By MICHAEL BARRIS .
TORONTO -
Educators in secular Jewish institutions should teach that milestone ceremonies: . of Jewish life have relevance to the individual.. This was the:consensus of 50 delegates from secular Jewish institutions in the- United States and Canada who held a two-day convention ■at'Glendon College last week.
The tendency whenteachr ing about bar mitzvah. wedding; funeral, and birth is for the teacher to promote traditional for tradition's sake. said. Dr. ■ Martin Bel-man, chairman of the study ■group program of the Secular' Jewish Organization. "We should not promote in-, ane. primitive, andmystical. practises which have no
place in.today'ssociety"
Instead.theteacher should, guide and issist the student to . read, write about, and ■ discus.s each event'that per-, sonally, affects' him. Then the student's experience of ' the event will be "an e.x-' pre.ssion oT Judaism that is meaningful to him arid relevant to today." Esther Pifko. director of the Secular Jewish Association., explained.. ' .Giving an example of what :
secular Jewish organizations, might strive to achieve. on6 delegate, representing a school in California, told the conference of a wedding ceremony she had attended, where the bride and bridegroom read personal selections ..Of verse which sym-t)olized. their feelings about marriage.
