order to achieve a peace that is both tair and durable." .
That remark and his reversal of his suggestion to move the U.S. ^m-^ bassy to Jerusaleni. were the .president's only references to the Middle East conflict. As Republican minority leader on March 17,-, 1972. the then congressman ot .Michigan told a Zionist Organiza-

Rep. John J; Rhodes (R. Ariz.), chairman of tlie Republican Platform Committee that election year, decided against in-

JERUSALEM (JTA) -
Max Fisher* of Detroit, chairman of the. Board ofGovernors of the Jewish Agency, said here that he is convinced ol . President Ford's "most friendly attitude, toward., -Israel." ."After my last meeting with him, I..be-• lieve 1.can assure you of the support of the United Stat^. and of the ■president toward Israel and her needs." Fisher declared at a press con-. ference on the eve. of the. opeinng.of a two-day meeting of the full Jew-.: ish Agency Executive.
Fisher, whose acquaintance with Ford dates back to the latter"s time . as a congressman from .Michigan,- said he met with the president' in Washington last Monday, before leaving forlsrael, , and that they had dis^-cussd for an hour a . number of problems af-. tecting Israel and Jews. He said.that Ford assure ed him that his door was always open and said he was m the process ofar-ranging a meeting of A-tnerican Jewish leaders with the president "to take place soon.'.' ' • ..
Fisher said he found, no. signs; of erosion or deterioration in America's attitude toward Israel since Ford took office last month. He said . the president had asked him to deliver personal greetings to Premier , Yitzhak Rabin and former Premier GoldaMeir, which he did.
According to Fisher, one of the first issues . Ford undertook to deal' with- after taking office was Soviet Jewry and . their right to emigrate
to Israel. Thanks to the president's personal intervention. Fisher said, "Weshouhi soon roach an understanding which, would bring a new wave of immigrants' from the Soviet Union to Israel.' He said that was.whv. immi-. gratlon figures could not be measured m monthly totals althoiieh . immi-. gration from the USSR was down bv l-'3 in the first eight months of this year compared to .'he same period last vear. : Fisher stressed the importance he attached to Rabin's visit to.Washirig-ton this month for talks with Ford and Secretary
of State Henry Kissinger. Ho said he thought it was particularly important that Rabin go to Washington now rather than later as. some .Israelis have /Suggested. -He said he expectpd Rabin to~|>res-ent Israel's position to the-American leaders no less successfully than previous- Israeli premiers did. . ~
Fisher defended Kissinger against re cent criticism, here that he was sellingout Israel for a.quick MiddleEast settlement; "It IS only., natural that in the relations between two nations, how-,
ever friendly they are, there should arise from time, to time some difference of yiews," Fisher said. He urged Israelis, however, not to forget "the historic role that Henry Kissinger played and "the things he did in a period of very dark days forlsrael. He IS a good friend of Israel." Fisher added that former President Nixon was also "a truefnend.of .Israel" who "fulfilled alibis promises to Israel and stood squarelvbehind : Israel through yery difficult and trying times."

A fervent prayer for lasting peace is on the. lips of every Jew as we celebrate the arrival of the New Year 5735.
In the past year 5734 - during the dramatic days of the Yom' Kippur.War and in the subsequent critical period of reconstruction. - the " Jewish National Fund responded with great vigour and determination to the challenge of ensuring the future progress of Israel, .^rom one end of the-country to the other and all along the perilous frontiers, the JNF prepared sites for settlements, built border roads, afforested the wilderness - creating new life for a brighter tomorrow, rr,
Canadian Jewry, which has always supported the Jewish National Fund so magnificently, is now embarked on the development of "Canada Park" as the nation's foremost leisure facility. In a spirit of faith and confidence we shall continue to fulfill our historic mission of reviving the Homeland through the establishiTtent of farms, communities and greenbelts.
We extend our heartiest wishes for a healthy, happy and successful. year to our^ devoted friends everywhere and to the entire House of Israel.
