Bom in New York City and educated at Cornell University and the Jewish Theological Seminary. Rabbi Yosi Derman has. for the past year, been
co-ordinating Beth Tikvah Synagogue's youth program — Kadimah. for kids eight to 11 years old; pre-USY. for "12-year-olds; and the 70-member junior and senior USY group, for 13-year-olds and older, most of whom attend Hebrew afternoon school, with only a few Hebrew day school students.
One of the many recent events at Beth Tikvah was last month's concert of the Shma Yisroel Orches-
tra, highly-acclaimed in Canada and on their Israeli tour with the Toronto Pirchei Choir last summer.
That concert, planned by Rabbi Derman, Stuart Razin. the new educational and youth director, and Murray Kideckel, chairman of the synagogue's youth committee, drew an audience of some 600 people of all ages.
Upcoming events for chapter members include a program on interdating

Stamps are much sought after
By CHAIM YEHUDA
Israeli stamps are usually collected with taibs. which make them almost unique in the world of philately. Tabs make use of the lower mairgin of the sheet of stamps which other countries usually leave blank. Tabs include descriptions, illustrations, and sometimes quotations from the Bible complimenting the design of the stamp.
A sheet is arranged in such a way that only the bottom row of stamps has the tabs attached. Early issues were printed in panes of 50. that is, 10X5^ with five tabs. Consequently, for many issues, only 10% of the stamps had tabs. More recently, however, many Israeli stamps have been printed in sheets of 15 or 20, which makes those stamps with tabs propor-
tionately more plentiful than most of the earlier issues, such as the "Flag of Israel." This particular stamp has side tabs instead of the usual bottom ones.
Let us examine why stamps with tabs are.desirable. Collectors are often looking for the harder to find items and due to their artistic beauty, stamps with tabs have become popular. Obviously, a stamp complete with tab is much nicer to look at or more elegant than a single without tab. This has been recognized by philatelists and consequently, tab singles in many cases have become very expensive, especially

the earlier issues. One example is , the magnificent Blue Menorah stamp, issued in 1952. It is worth about S206 mint with tab or $10 as a mint single. Many recent issues, however, are sold for only a few cents more with tabs;
One word of caution; some issues contain tabs which are perforated and include an extra piece of margin called the salvage. Tabs should be kept complete and the salvage must not be torn off as a short tab loses most of its value.
Recent Issues of Israel
On Oct. 14. a colorful set of three stamps was issued for "Protected Wild Birds" in the denominations of IL 1.10; 1.70; and 2.00. and a single for IL 4.00 commemorating "Hadassah Returns to Mount Scopus." These stamps are each printed in sheets of 15 with five descriptive tabs attached to the bottom row.
