Question: In- general terrns, what kind of financial assistance do new ininrtigrants get?
Answer: Within the first year of their aliyah. immigrants in need of financial assistance are entitled to loans for their, initial settlement.
The amount of the loan depends upon the size of the family and varies peri--odically in accordance with norms-established by the Ministry of Absorption.
Immigrants are entitled to receive a subsidy up to about S42 per month plus about S8 for cver>- family member — maximum S76 for rental of an apan-ment. Participation in payment of rent is extend-
ed to three y^ars. Single immigrants (women under 30. men under 35) receive about S35. Above that age. S40.
The mortgages which the Jewish Agency gives immigrants depends upon the cost of the apartment, the size of the immigrant family and the location of the apartment.
Mortgages range from 17 to 25 years at an interest rate between 9-13''o. The genera! rule is: The greater the cost of the apartment the smaller the loan. Apartments offered by the Jewish Agency always fall into the price range where a maximum mortgage can be given.
Since there are manv
details ande.xceptions to mortgage standards an Israel Aliyah Centre representative sho'uld be consulted. .
The Israel Aliyah Centre e.vtends loans for travel to Israel. Currently it cost an adult S398 for a one-way. subsidized ticket to Israel from New York. They also grant partial assistance for shipping of household goods in the form of loans.
Repayment for travel and shipping loans are in
Israeli lirot at the currency exchange fixed at the time of arrival in Israel.
In addition to the above financial assistance, there are other grants and loans such as immigrant student stipends. Financial ajd extends to the three, year tax-free benefits, as well as the subsidized cost of absorption centre on hostel and ulpan.
If you have a question pertaining to aliyah, submit it to Yitchak Sagee, Israel Alivah Centre.
