Marriage seminar May 28
TORONTO [Staff] -
Love and marriage, Jewish-style, will come under microscopic examination and be the subject of debate on May 28 when engaged and newly-married couples meet at B'nai B'rith's Youth Organization House.
In an all-day session, sponsored by an independent group called the Jewish Marriage Education Committee, subjects such as success in marriage and marital intimacy will be debated and dissected by six or seven couples and by various speakers.
Sessions are held twice a year and have been going on for the last eight years, according to Leo Davids, the organizer. Though the program is Orthodox-oriented, the York University associate professor of sociology remarks: "We don't want this to be a limited in-group for only Orthodox.
We're open to everyone."
Over the last few years, half of the participants have hailed from Orthodox backgrounds. 45% from Conservative homes and 5% have been Reform Jews. This year the mix is expected to be about the same as the last session, held late last year.
Speakers at the May 28th session include Rabbi Mver Berglas of Shaarei Tefillah, Rabbi Shmuel Stauber of B'nai Torah . and Perry Romberg of Jew:ish Family & Child Service.
Chavi Goldberg, one of the conveners, explains the purpose of the program: "We're trying to give young Jewish couples — engaged or married — a little bit of background for some of the situations that occur in marriage." she says. "Preparation for marriage is most vital,

pies usually entertain several misconceptions about marriage.
The first is that marital harmony is natural while divorce is something that happens to someone else, they explain. "Marriage is something that needs work." Davids notes. "It doesn't just roll along."
The second misconception is that romantic love lasts forever "and if it doesn't, there's something wrong." Mrs. Goldberg observes.
Part of the program includes a visit to the Shep-pard Avenue mikva conducted by Ayalla Abram-off, and in this connection Mrs. Goldberg claims there are many misconceptions about mikvas. . "Most people have no clear picture of a mikva," she says. "It's a turn-off word." Davids adds, "associated with backward old-world practices of yesteryear. Very often people think it's a filthy place."
Couples are urged to have children, if only for the sake of Jewish continuity, the Diitch-born academic says.
"The Jewish people face a drastic population decline." Birth control is, therefore, not encouraged by the Jewish Marriage Education Comrnittee.
Mrs. Goldberg and Da-
vids say the program has elicited a positive response from past partici: pants, but they hope more young couples will be attracted to the May 28 session. "The Torah has a
lot to say about the bedroom, not to mention the kitchen," Davids says.
Information about the program can be obtained from Chavi Goldberg at 633^4.
