Pearl Langer, former program conv sultant for CBC Toronto 5"s "From Now On." (Thursday mornings at 9), has
: been named as the program's new co-host, joining Gordon Jocelyn in providing a vital forum for senior adults. As an active .volunteer, Mrs. Langer became immersed: in the' field of gerontology (the aging process) and geriatrics (medical care for older people). She founded Co-ordinated Services
. to Jewish Elderly, and among other things was a prime mover in the Meals on. Wheels program, served" on the mayor's task force for the elderly and disabled, and worked with tjije United Way and the Canadian Institute on Religion and Gerontology. In 1975, Mrs; Langer was oneof 25 women honored by the government of Ontario for their contribution to the community in International Women ^s Year.
The 1979 winner of the annual Myer . Sharzer Award in Journalism is Kirk Makhi, one of the most outstanding students in his year, according to D.H. Butler, awards officer at Ryerson Poly-Itechnical Institute. The award, organized a number of years ago by.friends and family in memory of Myer Sh arzer to. commemorate his many years of service to the Canadian Jewish community.; Award-winner Makin is now employed; with The Globe and Mail in Toronto.

A "remarkablie friendship": between two nations, one huge, the other tiny, was toasted last week at a reception attended by Jewish communal leaders, Canadian politicians, businessmen, Israeli diplomats, rabbis and clergy-iTien.
' All were on hand to mark the publication of a book two years in the making, Canada-Israel Friendship: The First ThUty Years, pubHshed by the Canada-Israel. Committee. . ; ; ., .....
Among those present at the Park Plaza Hotel were: Postmaster-General and Minister of the Environment John Fraser, . rfep-. resenting Prime Minister Joe Clark, Minister of Employment and Immigration Ron Atkey,, Ontario Attorney-General Roy McMurtry and his cabinet colleague, Tom. Wells, minister of intergovern-. mental affairs;
Joining them was Rev. Roland de Corheille, a Toronto MP, and several candidates jri the Feb." 18 federai election, including John Roberts, former secretary of state, and Rob Parker, who lost his seat to de Corneille.
The book to whose launching they had come is said to be the first comprehensive record of Canadian-Israeli relations. It was edited by Shira Bessin.CIC's director of research, and David Kaufman, a young filmmaker whose documentary on poet A.M. Klein was broadcast on the CBC recently.
Canada-Israel Friendship: The First Thirty Years includes essaysi .political documents and personal interviews with . Canadians and Israelis who have contributed to forging the Canada-Israel: relationship.
. The committee which sponsored the bilingual, 144-page book was chaired by John Bassett. the publisher; Philippe De Gaspe Beaubien, a French Cartadian businessman, and Sol Kanee, a Winnipeg Jewish communal leader. .
Kanee praised the late Saul Hayes, the first executive-director of the Canadian Jewish Congress,-for_having furthered Canada-Israel ties.
FraserexteTiding greetings from Prime Minister Clark, referred to the "remarkable friendship" between Canada and Israel. He said Canada and Israel shared a democratic way of life, and described the Jewish state asan "island of stability in the Middle East."
He said he trusted the friendship would continue to flourish. \
Harold Buchwald, national chairman of the CIC, read a telegram from Prime Minister Clark, who
noted that Canada and Israel have enjoyipd "a special relationship." In an allusion to the
Jerusalem embassy affair. Fraser said that while some causes are worthy, they are not always a-
chieved.
. Earlier, De Gaspe Beaubien presented a copy of the book to Fraser, and
