Million Illegal Abortions A Year
Bangalore, Aug. 16; (UNI): As many as four million criminal abortions are being ! performed every year In India out of a total average of 6.5 million^ according to Dr. M. Arundhathi; Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Bangalore Medical College.
She told a medical seminar that of the four million induced abortions* only half a million were
done as per the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act,, which was introduced in 1972. '
Despite the legislation which was introduced to reduce the high rate of maternal mortality caused by septic and criminal abortions, maternal mortality rate in India was still 20 to 25 per cent, she said.
