TORONTO — Launched in 1988, the St. Patrick's Day Parade enjoyed immediate acceptance as an event to entertain the citizens of Toronto and Ontario, celebrating the culture, history and traditions of the 3.7 million Irish people in Canada.
The Toronto St. Patrick's Parade Society (a division of Naomh Padraig Cultural Society Inc.) is a non-profit organization founded in 1986, governed by a constitution which states that we are "non-political" and "non-sectarian", policies which we adhere both in letter and in fact.
From the first parade, which attracted over 50,000 people, to the 1991 outing that drew over 200,000 (police estimate), the parade has enjoyed phenomenal growth and acceptance as a major annual spectacle in Toronto.
Because of the tremendous success of the parade, in 1991 the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto proclaimed the week of March 17 as Irish Cultural Week and theCityof Toronto proclaimed March as Irish Heritage and Cultural Appreciation Month.
The 1992Parade takes place Sunday, March 15, at 12 noon and the Grand Marshal is Pat Marsden, the famous Irish/Canadian sportscaster and colour commentator. The parade will be just under three miles long and will consist of 20 bands, 25 floats, St. Brendan's boat, Irish dancers, the Sunquest Parade Queen, an Irish jaunting cart, Irish County Associations, the Gaelic Athletic Association,Metro's Finest - The Boys in Blue, wolfhounds, leprechauns, flags, banners, clowns, balloons, med ia celebri ties, some famous and some not so famous.
