FAMILY CREST
Evans, From About 1500
Evans, meaning "Son of Evan" from the given name Ifan, the Welsh form of John, dates from about 1500. Other variations of the name are Heavan, Heaven, Evens, Evance, Ifans, Ivin(g)s and Avans.
The Welsh AP means "son of" and in early times a long pedigree might be added to a man's name. The patronymic sometimes blended with the name to form such names as Powell — "son of Howell". Convenience of sound might change the P to B and we have Benyon — "son of Einion" and Bevan — "son of Evan", with the variations Bevans, Beven and Beavon. Just try to say "ap Owen" without getting the sound of Bowen.
Hereditary surnames were not generally used in Wales until about 1600, and even then, some families refused to use them. About the time of Henry VIII,
the Welsh gentry began to adopt surnames.
However, Edneut Ap Evan - the son of Evan, lived close to the Welsh border in 1287, and little later in 1300 we find a Howell ap Evan living close by.

VISIT THE NEW CELTWORLD
WATERFORD — A 20,000 square-foot mini-Disneyland is planned for Tramore. It will be known as Celtworld and its aim is to bring Celtic Ireland alive for tourists.
DUBLIN — Deep-sea dockers at Dublin Port postponed a ballot on proposals which it was hoped would save their jobs. Dublin Cargo Handling Ltd. will now be put into liquidation. The dockers say they are seeking legal advice on the decision to liquidate the company. L.F.

DYLAN THOMAS
Places That Nurtured a Poet's Genius
WALES — The third international Dylan Thomas School, devoted to the poet's life and works, will take place from July 19 to 31, 1992. The school will run for two weeks, and the venue will be the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth on the beautiful Cardigan Bay coast. Members will be housed in a university hall of residence.
The University of Wales is the oldest constituent college of the University of Wales, and Aberystwyth is also the home of other national institutions, most notably the National Library, the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies, the College's Department of Information and Library Studies, and the Welsh Books Council with its associated Centre for Children's Literature.
The aim of the Dylan Thomas School is the study of the poet's work in poetry and prose, in combination with guided tours to the places that nurtured his genius: the town of Swansea and the Gower peninsula (led by John Rhys Thomas and Gilbert Bennett of the Dylan Thomas Society of Great Britain, experts in the poet's Swansea
DYLAN THOMAS
background) and the area surrounding the famous Fern Hill and the village of Laugharne (led by George Tremless, co-author with the poet's widow of the most recent biography).
