By LI AM FERRIE IRELAND — A Belfast jury hit Barry McGuigan harder than he was ever his in the ring when it adjudged that he was guilty of libel and ordered him, and Channel 5 Video Ltd., to pay compensation of £750,000. In 1988 the Monaghan-born boxer made a video about his boxing career. In it, he accused Barney Eastwood of forcing him to fight against his will, while he was injured.
McGuigan was referring to the fight against Steve Cruz in Las Vegas, when he lost his title. Since the fight took place, rela-
tions between the two men have deteriorated rapidly and throughout the 25-day trial, they never spoke to each other.
The extreme heat in Las Vegas was always assumed to be the reason for the former world champion's failure to overcome an opponent he was widely expected to defeat. McGuigan says he will appeal the verdict and the level or damages.
Barney Eastwood told reporters that the case need never have gone to court if Barry McGuigan and Channel 5 Video had issued an apology and paid a nominal
sum to a selected charity. There is general surprise at the level of the libel award as it ranks in the top four ever awarded in a court in the UK.
Following the trial, a British tabloid, in its Irish edition, published a photograph taken at a celebratory party organized by Mr. Eastwood. Two of those drinking champagne were said to be members of the jury which had just delivered the huge award. The insinuations did not meet with Mr. Eastwood's ap-
f>roval and he is seeking further egal advice.

Celtic Team Wins 11 Times
DUBLIN — Liam Brady must be delighted with Celtic these days. On Saturday, March 21, he watched them defeat Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox to bring their run of victories to eleven. This followed a midweek 4-1 win over Motherwell.
Celtic are also two points closer to Hearts after the Edinburgh side lost 2-0 at Aberdeen. Hearts recovered three days later and overcame neighbours Hibs by 2-1, while Aberdeen slipped up against Dundee Utd, going down 2-0.
The top of the table now shows Rangers on 59 points, Hearts on 54, Celtic on 52 and Dundee Utd on 43. The top three teams have just seven games left to play.
