VANCOUVER — I recently attended the Five Corners Theatre play Conversations on a Homecoming by Tom Murphy at Studio 16. The theatre was busy for a Tuesday night, as we stood at the bar and sipped our Guinness, taking in the atmosphere of the stage setting before the play. The pub scene was set up in an authentic fashion, including a picture of John F. Kennedy and the Pope.
Conversations on a Homecoming is a play set in a pub in Galway. It is about a failed actor who returns to his native Galway from New York after a ten-year absence. All the actors had to take on Galway accents.
My emotions while watching the performance covered a wide spectrum, from feeling embarrassed for the failed actor's character to laughing at the characters and the craic in the pub. As

in most Irish pubs, one drink leads to another drink. The woman who owns the pub and her daughter are kept busy filling drinks and attempting to clear the table of glasses.
After the singing has taken place and a few more drinks are consumed, the accusations and insults start. Then, someone would come up with something philosophical, usually something the priest had said or done.
At the end, everyone just keeps on doing what they were going to do anyway and that's pretty much how it goes in a pub.
It was a great laugh to anyone who frequents Irish pubs and an education for others.
Mark Weatherley, the play's director, is now working on more Irish plays. Watch for the Five Corners Theatre next production, you'll enjoy it! Slainte.
SUMMER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION
A summer solstice celebration entitled "Sun That Shines From Human Hearts" will be held on June 21 at West Point Grey United Church, 4595 West 8th Avenue. Featured artists are Treasa O'Driscoll, singer, storyteller and Rita Cestanzi, harpist.
Their earlier winter solstice concert was a sell out and as Celtic Connection reviewer Bairbre Murray wrote in January, "these fine performers graciously moved us with images that stirred the dark and unredeemed places within, so that the light could enter... Iu the sensation of being covered in a delicate lace, the kind joy c over you."
