In Memory of Bridget (Pydge) Stack
Bridget (Pydge) Stack (nee McNamara) Deerpark, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare, Ireland, slipped away peacefully on May 17, 2014, at the Carrigoran Nursing Home, Newmarket-on-Fergus with her family by her side.
Predeceased by her husband Stephen and deeply missed by her loving daughters, Eileen, Anne, and Maura and sons, Gerard and Sean (Ireland) and son Paul (Vancouver), sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, sister Philomena, nephews, nieces, brother-in-law, relatives, neighbours and her many friends.
Many of Pydge's Canadian friends will also dearly miss her welcoming hospitality. With the Stack residence very close to Shannon Airport, many stayed overnight at Pydge's and were treated to an Irish breakfast including her delicious Irish soda bread before leaving the next morning for Canada.

FATHER'S DAY PRAYER
Lord please take care of our dads. Though they are brave and protective, they must also be frightened at times when money runs low and when we need things. Lord, when their hearts break because they can't do it all, please help us to let them know how much we love them. Amen.

Diaspora research at new SFU institute
VANCOUVER - Simon Fraser University's new Institute for Diaspora Research & Engagement (IDRE) is Canada's only research institute on diaspora.
It aims to promote a greater awareness and understanding of diaspora-related issues while helping diaspora communities improve their ability to make a difference in the world.
"Diaspora literally means a dispersal of peoples," says James Busumtwi-Sam, political science professor and director of the institute.
He says IDRE will work with individuals and groups who have a history of migration and who express their continued attachment to other countries through organized activities, connections and networks.
"While other universities have programs on migration and diaspora, no other research institute in Canada is exclusively focused on diaspora," says Busumtwi-Sam.
"And ours is the only one that has engagement in the name because, unlike traditional academic research institutes, we will combine scholarly research with community-based research driven by the community.
"The institute will be part of SFU's continuing effort to engage the world by strengthening relations between diaspora and researchers, government representatives, non-profits and the business community."
Diaspora communities around the world represent an enormous economic force, says Busumtwi-Sam, yet they have not been studied extensively.
"A2014 World Bank-sponsored conference noted that financial remittances from diaspora and broader migrants outstripped foreign aid by a ratio of four to one in2013 -that's $450 billion vs $120 billion."
Diaspora social remittances, such as the transmission and exchange of values and beliefs, are no less significant, he says, although more difficult to quantify.
The IDRE's first community-based research project is with Vancouver's Italian Cultural Centre to explore why, after a decline in interest over preceding generations, fourth-generation youth of Italian descent appear to be taking a keener interest in the centre and their heritage.
"We believe that the data garnered from this work will assist the organization as it refines itself within the context of a multicultural Canada," says Mauro Vescera, executive director, II Centro Italian Cultural Centre.
Busumtwi-Sam says he's excited about the institute's scope and possibilities.
"We fully anticipate that the promise embodied in the creation of this institute will be realized - the promise to become a nationally and internationally recognized center of excellence in scholarly and community-based research and engagement on diaspora issues."
