It's a free celebration of the Summer Solstice!
Tim Eriksen & The Trio de Pumpkintown make their local debut at The Rogue on Tuesday, June 24.
Self-proclaimed as the house band for New England's most musically rich imaginary village, the Trio brings a new, imaginative touch to the solid ground of acoustic folk and Americana.
With strings, a varied percussion section, bows, and stunning vocal harmonies, they call on the sometimes rollicking, sometimes tragic atmosphere of New England life, as well as the copious global connections underlying some of America's most stirring songs and dance tunes.
Tim Eriksen has both punk and folk credentials, as well as actual academic credentials in South Indian vocal and instrumental performance, and a long history of finding new sides to old songs with intensity and innovative instrumentation.
He was the driving force behind the alt-folk band Cordelia's Dad and has appeared on both Prairie Home Companion and the Academy Awards.
His long-time friend and collaborator, drummer Peter Irvine can drive a rock song or odd-meter Romany pop tune, or evoke an atmosphere with cymbals, glockenspiel, and other percussion.
Zoe Darrow studied the many facets of Celtic fiddle in Ireland, Cape Breton, and Prince Edward Island, before beginning her musical career with her father in 2002 and later becoming a sought-out collaborator and session musician.
Together, they create a sonic portrait of Pumpkintown: Fiddle tunes shake the barns, murder ballads haunt the hearth, and shape-note hymns rise from the graveyard.
Echoes of Zanzibar and India emerge from barn-dance chestnuts, while novel instrumentation lends new force to solemn, sorrowful songs.
The sonic variety and ever-changing moods reveal how well an imagined history can reflect the truth of our past.
The BBC calls Tim "the best ballad singer of his generation" and famed movie music divo T Bone Burnett proclaims that Tim has "one of the best voices in music." Not just folk music, but MUSIC. Period. Don't miss this show!!
Next month The Rogue is delighted to present a concert with Tony McManus and Laura Smith at St.
James Hall on Thursday, July 10.
Scots guitarist McManus now lives in Toronto, and he's recently teamed up with Nova Scotia singer songwriter Laura Smith. The two of them make sublime music together!
On the eve of their appearance at Island Musicfest in Courtenay, they will perform at The Rogue.
SCOTS guitarist Tony McManus and Laura Smith play The Rogue at St. James Hall on Thursday, July 10. McManus now lives in Toronto, and he's recently teamed up with Smith, a Nova Scotia singer songwriter.
Tony will accompany Laura in her set, and also perform a solo set, showcasing his incredible talent.
To find a unique voice on so ubiquitous an instrument as the acoustic guitar is quite an achievement.
To do so within a centuries old idiom where the instrument has no real history is truly remarkable.
In little over 10 years as a professional musician Tony has come to be recognized throughout the world as the leading guitarist in Celtic music.
From early childhood his twin obsessions of traditional music and acoustic guitar have worked together to produce a startlingly original approach to this ancient art.
In Tony's hands the complex ornamentation normally associated with fiddles and pipes are accurately transferred to guitar in a way that preserves the integrity and emotional impact of the music.
Intriguingly, his latest CD,Mysterious Boundaries, consists solely of classical compositions.
This is especially impressive in that he is a self-taught musician who didn't study classical guitar, nor did he read music, yet he puts his indelible stamp on such diverse and wondrous pieces as a Bach Prelude, a Gnossienne by Erik Satie and a Spanish Dance by Granados.
And he plays them all on a steel string guitar - a first in the genre. This concert, too, will be a sonic delight!!
All this and more can be found on our website at www.roguefolk.bc.ca and music by these performers can be heard on The Edge On Folk every Saturday from 8 AM to noon on CiTR FM101.9 and www.citr.ca.
Vancouver Folk Music Fest: A weekendfilled with music to soothe the soul
VANCOUVER - For lovers of Celtic-inspired music in all its delicious and varied flavours, the 2014 Vancouver Folk Music Festival lineup serves up a soul-satisfying musical meal all weekend long, July 18-20 at Jericho Beach Park.
The lineup of over 60 acts includes a singer-songwriter steeped in Scottish tradition, a couple of Irish hit-makers, a Bangor expat, and some fine Canadians whose musical influences are drawn from the same vine. And that's just the beginning!
From Karine Polwart's extraordinary voice, to Foy Vance's American-influenced sounds, to rocking Saw Doctors band-mates Leo Moran and Anthony Thistlethwaite (AKA Leo & Anto), there is something there for every discerning Celtic ear.
Add to that artists and bands of the francophone, singer-songwriter, Americana, and worldly persuasions, and you have a festival that delivers the kind of variety that satisfies every musical taste.
Karine Polwart is an award-winning Scottish singer-songwriter whose music draws from folk music's long tradition, yet keeps pace with the ceaselessly changing times.
Her talent for crafting unique, enduring melodies, her gift for saying just enough without overstating her case, the range and dynamism of her arrangements, all come together in songs of powerful contemporary relevance.
"For me", Polwart says,"music is one of the most powerful ways of making sense of the world. It's for celebrating, grieving, sharing, wondering.
"Nothing inspires me more than the realisation that any one of my songs means something to someone else."
She sings with a pure, enthralling voice, and often plays an Ml shruti box in the key of C!
Leo Moran and Anthony Thistlethwaite, from the Irish supergroup, The Saw Doctors, are out on tour on their own this year!
After being on the road together for more than 20 years, this engaging, rollicking duo have a ton of songs to sing and stories to tell.
They are dedicated to entertaining their audience with their wicked sense of humor, singing well-known Saw Doc's hits, their own tunes and genuinely great music. Their show has been described as "bloody brilliant!"
Foy Vance was born in the Northern Ireland town of Bangor, but his passion for traditional music was born in the southern states of the U.S. As a child, Foy relocated with his preacher father across the pond - travelling across the American south, widening his horizons and absorbing the region's rich musical traditions.
Returning to Ireland some years later, Foy began writing his own music, deeply shaped by the sounds of his youth - emotional and soulful songs about love and life's "spectacular miseries" in a voice that rattles you and forces you to let it in.
On the Canadian side of things, Nova Scotia's Rose Cousins, rockers Wintersleep and ukulele-maestro James Hill will be flying across the country,
