Legendary Scottish Hero Sizzles in Neeson's Kilt
By SHARON GREER
Stealing the show seems to be a common thread amongst films these days and Tim Roth certainly did so in Michael Caton-Jones' (Scandal) latest film, Rob Roy.
Aside from Roth's outstanding performance as the fiendish oddity, Archibald Cunningham, John Hurt also stood out as the Marquis of Montrose and Brian Cox as Roth's spineless sidekick, was also laudable.
The storyline of this film is about an Eighteenth Century Scottish chieftain, Robert Roy MacGregor (Liam Neeson), who hopes to improve his peoples' lot in life.
Unfortunately, MacGregor borrows £1,000 from the greedy, ruthless Marquis of Montrose and loses everything due to the unscrupulous behaviour of Montrose's two underlings, and so the plot unravels.
The film overall lacked a true essence, and contrary to what some critics have written on it, had a great many painful Hollywood moments. Some of the melodramatic music is hard to take and the ending is agonizingly banal.
Although Jessica Lange, as MacGregor's wife, turns in a good performance, I found myself continually waiting for the appearance of the truly evil Cunningham.
Actually, my first clue to the film's content, was when sitting in the theatre waiting for the film, I noticed that most of the audience were young, macho-looking males. True, for those who enjoy swashbuckler performances, it's probably a must. But, I lost interest in those movies when I was 12.
Okay, okay, no one looks as good as Liam Neeson in a kilt, but is that really a good enough reason to sit through this movie? Well, maybe.

FORT WILLIAM, Scotland — A cairteal punrtid and slisneagan — a quarter«pounder and frieo -~~ are coming to the Highlands as a new McDonalds outlet adopts Gaelic. "We realize that a move to Fort William was taking us into the heart of the MacDonald clan country, butl fear we will need some help with the translations," said spokesman Robert Parker.
A local news agency helped out: Mac Mor (Big Mac), burger caise (cheeseburger), pa t nbhal teth (hot apple pie) and mac ceapaire i$ean (McChicken sandwich), and the ubiquitous Coca-Cola. — Renter
