A Winning Formula Keeps Laughter Rolling
By SHELLY BROWN
One of Cape Breton Island's funniest and most popular productions The Cape Breton Summertime Revue began in 1986 as an offshoot of the popular music and comedy production The Rise and Follies of Cape Breton Island.
That first year, The Cape Breton Summertime Revue, was lucky to be able to include Rita MacNeil in its inaugural cast and toured for six weeks to highly receptive audiences.
By 1987, Rita's career had taken off and two relatively unknown singers from Mabou, Cookie and Heather Rankin, joined the cast. Of course, we now know these two as founding members^of the
much acclaimed Rankin Family. Also joining the show, was a young and talented comic actor Bette MacDonald.
The format, a series of interlocking songs, instrumentals -and comedy sketches, allows writers, musicians and actors to come and go, insuring that The Revue is always fresh.
In 1994 when The Revue undertook their first national tour and travelled from Glace Bay to Vancouver, playing 25 cities to over 50,000 people.
This year, The Cape Breton Summertime Revue is once again touring nationally and the cast includes a number of familiar faces from past shows, as well as five

talented newcomers.
Veterans include Bette Mac-Donald, who is developing a remarkable solo comedy career; Maynard Morrison, an actor/ singer/ writer who has been with the shows since the first Follies in 1977; Richard Burke, a remarkable singer and multi-instrumentalist; Fred Lavery, songwriter and guitar player; Berkley Lamey, a bass player who also was part of the 1977 Follies; and Krista Touesnard, a young fiddler and step-dancer who joined the show in 1993.
Among the newcomers are Jamie Foulds, Gordie Sampson and Matthew Foulds, who have received national attention for their debut album and videos with their band Real World; Maura Lea Morykot, who has established herself locally as a talented singer and actor; and Wendy Maclsaac one of the best of the young fiddlers to have emerged in Cape Breton in recent years.
This year is the tenth anniversary year for The Cape Breton Summertime Revue. Its winning formula of music and comedy, combined with a rich talent-base and a rapidly expanding market, insures that this popular and entertaining stage show will be around for many years to come.
