VANCOUVER—On October 28, The Celtic Connection held a fundraiser and celebration of Samhain (the Celtic New Year). As Tom Landa, leader of The Paperboys said, "We're all here tonight to show our support to The Celtic Connection for helping to continue to keep our culture alive."
This has been a tall order many | times, since we do not receive any funding other than revenues from subscriptions and our loyal advertisers. Volunteers are the backbone of this organization and we simply could not survive without their help in all aspects of the paper.
At the event, volunteers were everywhere, starting with J.J. Hyland who took tickets at the door. Behind the bar, the ever-efficient Kate McNamee was kept busy all night pouring drinks and controlling lights.
Sharon Greer, her niece Tara Boire and Teresa Segarty all handled beverage tickets with great efficiency. Tom O'Sullivan was in charge of raffle tickets and Mike Paul the Public Relations officer for the Scottish Cultural Centre, helped out wherever needed. Karen Franklin, who has given of her professional skills as a photographer, documented the night on film.
A very sincere thank you to everyone who turned out to support our fundraising event, especially the Vancouver Gaelic football team and The Shamrock Rovers Soccer team.

Special thanks to Gary Howe of The Scottish Cultural Centre and leader of the group Double Axis who worked from 6 PM to midnight to provide sound for all the performers.
Also, a special thank you to Tom Butler for his indispensable help and guidance.
Music was provided by some of the finest Celtic musicians in town. The show was opened by
Whiskey Jacks, who played many folk and Irish favourites and warmed up the audience for two fantastic Irish dancers from the Moore School. Nora and Laina Pickett left the audience calling for more. Ken Howard and members of the Vancouver Comhaltas Ceoltoiri provided traditional Irish music.
Finally, everyone's favourite Celtic rockers, The Paperboys, brought everyone to their feet. Their rousing tunes had the crowd jumping and dancing with jigs and reels and Celtic rock.
Door prizes and prizes for best Halloween costumes were generously provided by Irish Fancy store, Guinness Breweries and Jameson Whiskey. Their contributions are deeply appreciated.
On a daily basis, The Celtic Connection responds to telephone enquiries relating to anything Celtic. We refer these calls to various groups and organizations within the community and also to our advertisers, who provide the goods and services which these callers seek.
The Celtic Connection performs a very necessary and unique service to the Celtic community but we need your help and support to continue.
Our next fundraising event will be held on January 19, at The Scottish Cultural Centre with a popular dance band from Scotland, The Garioch Blend. For more details, see page seven of this issue. Don't stand on the sidelines, stand up and be counted—support your culture!
