Cannon Praises Shamrock Rovers Team
By CATHOLINE BUTLER
VANCOUVER — I spoke to Ritchie Cannon, coach of The Shamrock Rovers soccer team, as the team relaxed with a few dark and creamy pints at The Penny Lane Pub after winning their league division title in the Richmond Soccer League.
Ritchie said, "it's a pretty incredible win, since this was our first year. The team was formed more or less as a 50-50 team — you win some, you lose some and you learn a lot."
Beyond his wildest dreams, the Shamrock Rovers began winning and never stopped all season, incredibly losing only one game.
Ritchie complimented his team saying that prior to this year, most of them had never played organized soccer before, since most of them were Gaelic football players who thought this would be a great way to stay in shape until football season.
Team players Sean Minagh and Marty McCann represented The Shamrock Rovers at the All Star Game and Ritchie said, "Marty
RITCHIE CANNON
McCann deserves special mention, having made 23 goals on the year."
Ritchie was born in Dublin but it was here that he began playing soccer. He has continued to play at a highly competitive level ever since coming to Canada. He has played with The Whitecaps and The Houston Dynamos and has played indoor soccer in Chicago, all of which make him well-qualified to coach the Rovers team.
As a result of the Rovers' performance this year, they will move
into the Richmond First Division next year. Ritchie said they may even nave to form two teams next year since they have enough players to do this now.
Many of the teams the Rovers played against this year were sponsored and Ritchie said this is a very pressing need for the Rovers team right now since they require track suits, sweat shirts and sports equipment.
This was their first year and they've won their division, so there must be some individual or company willing to back a team of winners. Anyone interested in playing or sponsoring The ShamrockRovers, please call Ritchie Cannon (604)454-9055.
CONDOLENCES
Deepest condolences are extended to Roisin Sheedy-Culhane whose mother Claire Culhane recently passed away. Claire was a well-known civil rights activist whose work on behalf of prisoners was widely recognized.
