IRELAND FUND OF CANADA
Irish Ambassador Welcomed in Edmonton
DEMPSEY, The Irish Ambassador to Canada and Julianne O'Loughlin, President of the Edmonton Irish Sports and Social Society at the club premises in Edmonton, Alberta.
By CELESTE SINCLAIR EDMONTON — The Edmonton Chapter of the Ireland Fund of Canada held its third annual Fall Brunch on October 27, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
The Irish Ambassador to Canada, Paul Dempsey, was the guest speaker and a star-studded cast from the Celtic Arts Society of Alberta put on Sean O'Casey's Bedtime Story.
During Ambassador Dempsey's visit of October 23 to 28, he met with representatives of the Alberta Provincial Government and Edmonton City Hall.
He also met a group of 14 Irish-Canadians who welcomed the opportunity of establishing a chapter of the Ireland-Canada Chamber of Commerce in Edmonton.
Ambassador Dempsey and his wife Jan enjoyed a preview showing of the Neil Jordan film Michael Collins with members of the Irish Sports and Social Society.
Afterwards, the ambassador and his wife visited the Irish Sports and Social Club where they met and chatted informally with members. He even participated in the ceili dance class.
The ambassador spoke of the great contributions which the Irish have made to Canada and how we Canadians can continue to contribute to Ireland — specifically in the ongoing peace process there.
Dempsey stressed the Edmonton Irish Sports and Social Society's unusual achievement of owning and operating its own premises
and remarked on the challenge to members to continue to "stay afloat" and operate debt free.
Both the Ambassador and his wife gave generously of their time in meeting members of the Irish community here and it was indeed an honour for the community to host such a gracious and inspirational speaker.
