Annual Seattle _
Yuletide Concert
By ANGELA MITCHELL
SEATTLE, Washington—It's the perfect combination to celebrate the Yuletide season: a winter's night, the echo of a cathedral and the ancient, soul-stirring sounds of Celtic harps, hammer dulcimers, pennywhistles, strings and percussion in age-old carols and melodies.
Philip and Pam Boulding, the duo comprising Magical Strings, have set this year's Magical Strings Celtic Yuletide Concerts, following up on last year's sold-out appearances, with three performances in Seattle's St. Marks Cathedral, at 1245 10th Avenue East, on December 19 at 7:30 PM and December 20, at 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM.
The duo has built a large following around its deft transformation of traditional Celtic and original melodies into a lush, unique and instantly recognizable musical experience.
Joined in these Yuletide performances by their five talented children on violin, cello, harp,
piano and field organ, the Bouldings will also be accompanied by a splendid array of talented musicians and dancers. The evening features music and dance, juggling and storytelling, processionals and singing.
Magical Strings will also present Yuletide concerts on December 6 in Spokane, December 13 in Tacoma, December 14 in Portland, Oregon, December 15 in Kent, December 21st in Olympia and December 22 in Mt. Vernon.
Advance tickets for the performances at St. Marks Cathedral are $20 (reserved section seating), general seating $15 (adults), $8 for children and $17 and $10 respectively at the door.
Tickets are available from the Elliott Bay Book Company inPio-neer Square on 101 South Main, Galway Traders in Ballard at 7518 15th NW (206) 784-9343), the Seattle Waldorf School's Crayon Place (206) 528-0335), at the St. Marks Cathedral Shop, and from Magical Strings at (206) 857-3716.

Winter Harp Enthralls Listeners
By DELANNE REID
VANCOUVER — Imagine a candle-lit stage, a golden Celtic harp, a stately classical harp, flutes and an array of bells, chimes and hand drums.
This will be the scene of Winter Harp, a magical candlelight concert of words and music celebrating the Christmas season on December 15, at St. Andrew Wesley Church, at Burrard and Nelson.
The setting is stunning — two beautiful harps on stage shimmer in the glow cast from more than 80 candles set in crystal can-delabras. Medieval hand drums, Tibetan temple bells and North African clay drums provide the back drop for traditional, Medieval and modern carols performed on harps and flute.
The focus is a unique and haunt-ingly beautiful integration of the world's three oldest instruments — harps, flutes and percussion. Add thought-provoking readings with Gregorian chants and you have an evening that transports the audience into the heart of winter and the Yuletide season.
The Winter Harp Series began in New Westminster in 1985, as a free one-hour concert with an audience of 25 people. It eventually moved to Maple Ridge in 1989, where 70 people turned up for the concert. Now a Maple Ridge tradition, the event sells out each year in a few hours.
Winter Harp expanded to Vancouver in 1993, performing to a sold out house of 112. Each year the attendance doubles — 600 people attended Winter Harp in 1995 at historical St. Andrews Wesley Church.
The growing series now reaches outside the Lower Mainland with concerts taking place throughout the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island and Pacific Northwest. Winter Harp consistently receives standing ovations and rave reviews.
The carol arrangements for Winter Harp feature works from Lori Pappajohn's recording Celtic Harp for Christmas. This album is top-selling for its North American Distributors and is also sold throughout Europe and Asia.
She says, "Music is such a gift, I feel that as musicians, our mission in life is to give to people — give them laughter, give them an opportunity to smile and give them a chance to reflect on life and its pathways. This is why we play. What better time of the year to touch people's hearts than at Christmas time?"
Tickets for Winter Harp are $14 and can be charged by phone at (604) 517-5900 or purchased at Magic Flute at 2203 West 4th Avenue. For more information, call (604) 521-7194.
