Great Celtic Line-Up This Fall
ESSIES
Cead mile failtel Sldn to the summer of '99:The weather was forgettable; the music was memorable. The Vancouver Folk Music Festival was a personal highlight, with extraordinary sounds from around the globe and plenty of welcome sunshine. Scots acts Shooglenifty and Keep It Up were both in superb form, upholding Edinburgh's reputation for music and for partying.

You certainly can't fault this fall, at least as far as music is concerned. Two of the most exciting Irish acts on the planet will play in our fair town in the next wee while, both with new releases in
tow..........Lunasa blew everybody else off the stage
at the Vancouver Celtic festival earlier this year, and anyone who missed that show will get the chance to see what the fuss is about September 16 at St. James Hall. The group has been creating quite a stir in Ireland for some time now, and their recent signing with US label Green Linnet is bound to raise the band's profile on this side of the
water..........Lunasa's second CD and their first with
their new label, entitled Otherworld, has just been released to coincide with this tour..........The Vancouver East Cultural Centre will be a superb venue to enjoy the breath takingly beautiful music of Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill when they make a welcome return to Vancouver on October 1. Martin is one the finest (many would say the finest) Irish fiddle players alive, and when joined by Dennis' sweet guitar accompaniment the result is pure
poetry..........This month sees the release of Line in
Seattle, recorded in January at the Tractor Tavern. The new CD is said to capture the excitement of Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill's live performances. •
The two aforementioned acts are far from the only gigs worth catching this autumn. .The new young group Calico from Cork play their first Vancouver snow on September 12 at St. James Hall. The band's debut release, Celanova Square, demonstrates that they're one to watch..........St. James
Hall Cape Breton fiddle player (and doughnut chain spokesperson) Natalie MacMaster comes to the Vogue Theatre September 30.On her latest release, In My Hands, Natalie continues to mix the traditional and the not-so, and is joined for a couple of cuts by Irish accordion ace Sharon
Shannon..........The Scots musical event of the fall
season has to be the October 8 show at the W.I.S.E. Hall with sister act Jennifer & Hazel Wrigley plus
songwriter Brian McNeill..........The Rogue Folks
have expanded their fall lineup of shows staring with a lively double bill of local acts — Mad Pudding and Fear of Drinking — October 15 at the
W.I.S.E...........There's more Cape Breton music to
be had when family band The Barra MacNeil's play the W.I.S.E. on October 28, and when guitarist and
fiddler J.P. Cormier plays there November 7..........if
you like your Celtic rocked check out Tempest on November 9 at the W.I.S.E...........Daithi Sproule
(of Altan fame ) and James Kelly have teamed up to tour as a duo and will be at the W.I.S.E. December 17. The two Irish musicians will also be leading guitar and fiddle workshops on the 16th. Contact
the Rogue at 604-736-3022 for details..........Possible
Rogue shows in the new year include The Battlefield Band and Martin Carthy. Watch this space. •
They're back! department: There's good news to be had for all the Christy Moore fans in the crowd. It seems he's come out of his self-imposed retirement and has some live dates scheduled in
Ireland..........Four Men & a Dog will be reuniting
(as a six-piece band including guitar wizard Arty McGlynn) for a tour next summer which will have
some Western Canadian dates..........There's also
soon to be a Waterboys reunion gig in Galway. •
After a break for summer, the Vancouver Ceili Society starts monthly dances again on September 18 at the Victoria Drive Community Hall with music by Martindale. As always, this is a kid-friendly
event..........The Irish Heather has live music most
nights. Mondays it's Six Crows Gold, Tuesdays Randy & Friends, on Thursdays Mary & Peter & Friends and new addition Small Potatoes on Sunday nights...........Culpepper's is introducing a
"Maritime Night" on the fourth Thursday of the month, with all east coasters welcome. Tuesday sees Mary & Peter host an Athenry session and Wednesday night is a traditional Irish seisuin. Thursday there's a Celtic and folk open stage with Danny, Hughie & Angus. Danny Burns &the Ballad Band are joined by Irish step-dancers Friday and Saturday.

CD News: Popular local party band Fear of Drinking have just released a live CD, In Black &
White..........Quebec's finest, La Bottine Souriante,
have recently signed a worid-wide with giant EMI giving fans outside Canada better access to the group's recordings. Look for La Bottine at next year's folk festival as part of a special francophone
program..........In addition to signing Lunasa, Green
Linnet has also added Scotland's Old Blind Dogs to their roster, with a first release on the label slated for this fall. The Dogs will be touring in North America in early 2000..........Shooglenifty will hopefully be heading into the studio early next year to work on their fourth album. The band's globe-trotting touring schedule makes finding time to record difficult. Following their wildly successful Western Canadian festival tour this summer the lads are off to Borneo and Cuba!
