Oysters and Guinness: a Winning Combo
CALGARY — What could be more enjoyable than a groundbreaking, two-day festival dedicated to one of the most intrigu-ingly delicious delicacies from the sea and Calgary's best pint of Guinness, poured at The James Joyce Irish Pub.
Such was the brainchild of proprietors Gerard and Anne Curran who hosted a spectacular Oyster Festival in downtown Calgary on August 20 and 21. The event was a roaring success starting Friday at noon with a celebrity oyster shucking challenge.
Events continued into the wee hours with several lively jazz bands, traditional bands and dance performances from The Finnuala Irwin School of Irish Dancing.
On Saturday afternoon, 10 of Calgary's top chefs competed in an oyster shucking competition. Winner Yoshi Chubachi from the Calgary Petroleum Club won the coveted prize of a trip to the world's biggest Oyster Festival held each year in Galway in the West of Ireland.
Guinness and oysters have long been a tradition in Ireland, a marriage that began when stout was the working man's drink and oysters were inexpensive and easily obtained in coastal towns. As Dickens often remarked, "a man could eat and drink cheaply if he stayed with Guinness and oysters."
Well, Guinness and oysters may no longer be the staple diet for Ireland's working class but they sure were the main staple at this festival as hundreds of Calgarians slurped and supped their way through 12,000 freshly shucked oysters with unending frothy pints of Guinness, while taking in some great weather and entertainment.
The event was sustained by 80 to 100 volunteers and raised 85,000 for the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation.
Destination Donegal
CARRICKFIN, County Donegal — Author Edna O'Brien has become the latest celebrity to set up home in County Donegal. O'Brien, author of bestsellers such as The Country Girls and Lantern Slides, has just purchased an eight-bedroom house in Carrickfin overlooking Gweedore Bay.
While living in London, the writer has been a frequent visitor to the Rosses area but now intends settling in the area permanently. Among her neighbours will be former Birmingham Six prisoner Johnny Walker, playwright Brian Friel and former Beruit hostage Brian Keenan, who have holiday homes in the area.
CLANTERRA provided traditonal Irish entertainment to accompany all the other traditional delights.
TOP CHEFS displayed their skills as they competed in the oyster shucking competition.
