Euro 2000 Qualifier Scotland 0 England 2
Billed by the tabloids as the "Battle of Britain" the first leg of the Euro 8000 football (soccer) tournament qualifying round between Scotland and England was played at Hampden Park, Glasgow on Sat-urda>r. Two first-half goals by England's Paul Scholes, the second from a cross by David Beckham, silenced the "Tartan Army" of Scottish supporters. Scotland failed to score though they did hit the cross-bar. The second leg is played at Wembley on 17 November. The Scottish manager, Craig Brown, remained optimistic. It is perhaps worth remembering that this play-off between Scotland and England arose because neither side scored sufficient points to qualif)' as a matter of right in the earlier rounds....
WHISTLER'S IRISH AMBASSADORS leave the Dubh Linn Gate Pub for Dublin. The pub recently sponsored a cycle trip to Ireland for a local charity. Five Whistler locals (all with Irish ancestry of course), spent three weeks cycling from Shannon around the beautiful western and northern coastline, ending up in Dublin. While there, they presented a special memento of their trip to the Dubh Linn Gate's adopted sister pub in Ireland, Kavanagh's of Glasnevin, which has Dublin's oldest license. The photo shows the Dubh Linn Gate's Irish Ambassadors and Danielle Bourget with general manager Bernard Raftery.
Scotland Manager Will Quit
If Scotland fails to reach the next football World Cup Finals, to be held in Japan and Korea in 2002, the manager, Craig Brown, says he will step down.
His current contract runs to the end of 2001. He has been in charge of the team since 1993 and is highly regarded by his peers.
But the failure of Scotland to reach the Euro 2000 finals has led to media speculation about his position. But he says that if Scotland qualifies for the World Cup finals and he is asked to stay on, he would do so.
He points out that in the recent play-off against England, both teams won a match each and the

Freedom of Glasgow for Sir Alex Ferguson
The manager of the all conquering Manchester United Football Club, Sir Alex Ferguson, was given the freedom of the City of Glasgow this week. Sir Alex was born in the Govan area of the city. The honour is has no monetary or other benefit - unless you want to graze cows on Glasgow Green, which comes with the historic award. Sir Alex has already been given the freedom of Aberdeen, where he had his first major footballing triumph.

MICHELLE DE BRUIN BECOMES A MOTHER
DUBLIN — Triple Olympic gold medallist Michelle de Bruin has become a mother. The 29-year-old swimmer gave birth to a baby girl, Emma, at Kilkenny General Hospital with husband Erik by her side.
Earlier this year de Bruin conceded that her swimming career was effectively over after she lost an appeal against a four-year ban.
The embargo was by swimming's international governing body, FINA, which found that de Bruin had tampered with a urine sample taken for drug screening.
An appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland subsequently heard the drug androstenodione was found in samples taken from the champion between August 1997 and March 1998. However she has since continued to protest her innocence.
