Hope for the Future of Irish Soccer
UEFA u-18 qualifying tournament: Rep of Ireland 2 Liechtenstein 0 Rep of Ireland 1 Malta 0
After the disappointment surrounding the senior side's failure to reach Euro 2000, Brian Kerr's U-18s softened the blow by qualifying from their UEFA preliminary group on November 24, once again giving the country great hope for the future.
The Irish team which travelled to Malta, where they were faced with the task of eliminating Liechtenstein and the host country, contained the nucleus of the 1998 UEFA U-16 champion team, which was a good indication of the progress and continuity at this level. Kerr, as usual, had his foes summed up when predicting they would be well organised and hard to beat. Indeed Liechtenstein, Ireland's first opponents, were everything the Irish manager said they would be and in that respect offered a welcome departure from their more senior compatriots.
Young Arsenal striker Graham Barrett scored both of Ireland's goals in the 2-0 win, with Liechtenstein taking the field an organised and physically imposing outfit, yet putting nine men behind the ball. Manchester United defender John O'Shea started the move which led to the first score on 25 minutes, quickly releasing Ben Burgess in an advanced position.
As it happened 6'3" striker Burgess scored the only goal of the game on 43 minutes to give Ireland victory.
"If it was boxing it would have been stopped by half time because we had so much possession," said Brian Kerr afterwards. "They had one shot with ten minutes to go and got one corner kick which they were lucky to get," said a delighted Irish manager. Ireland progress to a two-legged meeting with France in the spring, and hopefully on to the finals in Germany. — The Irish Emigrant
