THE SAM MAGUIRE CUP
The Sam Maguire Cup is awarded annually to the winners of the All Ireland Senior Football Championship. The cup is named in honor of a man who gave outstanding service to Ireland and to the GAA in Britain.
Born in Clonakilty, County Cork, Sam Maguire spent most of his adult life in London as a Civil Service employee.
By reason of his employment, his earnestness and determination of purpose, this taciturn Protestant patriot became a trusted confident of Michael Collins in London. He rendered invaluable assistance to the republican movement when Collins' campaign of counter-intelligence began to take its toll in Dublin.
Quiet almost to silence, Sam was noted for a real sense of humor and a most charming manner. Apart from his patriotism, probably his most outstanding characteristic was the way in which he looked after the less fortunate of his compatriots. It was said that his charity was boundless.
The cup to commemorate this great player and patriot was purchased by his friends and associates in the movement, and was first presented to the Football All-Ireland winners in 1928. Kildare, then defending champions, beat Cavan in that game.
The winners of the Football All-Ireland were presented with that same trophy each year up to and including 1987 when Meath beat

Cork. A new trophy was awarded for the 1988 final, as the old one was suffering from the ravages of the passing years. Meath became the first winners of the new trophy, which is still known as the Sam Maguire Cup.

THE LIAM MCCARTHY CUP
The All-Ireland Senior Hurling trophy, the Liam McCarthy Cup, is also named in honour of a man
who gave outstanding service to the GAA in Britain.
Liam McCarthy was born in England in 1854. His parents, Eoghan McCarthy from County Cork and Brigid Dineen from County Limerick, had moved to England shortly before the famine. Liam was over six feet tall and weighed 18-stone, and his upbringing in London was steeped in Irish culture and tradition.
Liam McCarthy became a very successful businessman and channeled much of his profits into Irish causes. A borough councilor for 12 years, he became the first treasurer of the GAA in London.
Twice chairman of the Gaelic League, he was foremost in every Irish cause at a time when it was not popular to be doing so, and his home became a halfway house for Irish emigrants when they arrived in England.
Before 1921, the All-Ireland Hurling trophy was the Great Southern Cup. It was suggested to Liam that he should put up money for a new All-Ireland trophy to help promote the game of hurling. And so, in 1922, Liam McCarthy paid a whopping u50 to Edmund Johnson Ltd. of Grafton Street to design a trophy that would be awarded annually to the winners of the All-Ireland Hurling Championship.
The Liam McCarthy Cup was first presented tp Limerick, the All-Ireland winners in the 1921 final played in 1923, and to every winner since, although a new McCarthy Cup was commissioned in 1992.
Regardless of who wins in Croke Park in September, we might do well to remember Sam Maguire and William "Liam" McCarthy, men who dedicated their lives to all things Irish and to Gaelic Games in particular.
