SFU Pipe Band World Champs - Again!
HE Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has taken this year's crown at the 54th W annual World Pipe Band Championships vJ> held at Glasgow Green. Astoundingly, this is the fourth time in seven years in which the Burnaby, British Columbia pipe band has been awarded the world's top ranking.
The title was very tightly contested by second place rivals Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia from Scotland who were first last year. Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band placed third, having achieved second last year. The Grade Two event was won by the Queensland Highlanders of Australia.
The event was attended by over 6,000 musicians representing 200 pipe bands from as far afield as Japan, Oman, South Africa and many parts of North America, including Alaska.

Lost Film on Burns 'Premiered'
A film made by MGM in 1937 about the life of Robert Burns was shown at the recent Burns Federation World Conference in Atlanta, Georgia by Professor G. Ross Roy of the University of South Carolina who rediscovered the only copy.
The film will be shown in Scotland at a Burns International Conference in Glasgow next January. The film runs for 65 minutes and is entitled Auld Lang Syne.
In recent years, four movie projects on the life of Burns have failed to progress - including a Hollywood version that at one time was supposed to feature Johnny Depp.

Billy Connolly's An Angel
Speaking at the Edinburgh International Film Festival launch of his latest film Gabriel and Me in which he plays a grumpy archangel looking after a small boy, Billy Connolly asserted that the recent conversion of his beard to a shade of green was because "I just fancied a change."
He was at a party when he saw someone with a red beard and decided "I must do the green thing." He denied that he chose the colour because of his support of Celtic Football Club. But he did comment that a lot of people who ask about his green beard have blue noses...

Chart Success for Highland Cathedral?
In the 1970s, the pipe band of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards made it to the top of the hit parade for seven weeks with Amazing Grace and sold 14 million copies world-wide.
Now they hope to do it again with the lament Highland Cathedral -which was chosen by Madonna as a wedding march at Skibo Castle last December.
The tune features on the regiment's pipes and drums album Highland Cathedral as it is one of the pieces most requested by audiences.
The pipe-tune, amazingly, was written by two Germans, Uli Roever and Michael Korb. The words and music are intended to emphasise the feeling of a National Anthem.
The story goes that, under the reign of King James I of Scotland, all clan chiefs were asked to meet in a secret place, the Highland Cathedral, to pledge an ending to their constant feuding, and live in peace. This they did and peace reigned but, alas, only for as long as the king lived. The tune has words by Ben Kelly who was inspired after hearing the pipe-tune.
