New Irish Cultural Academy in Belfast
BELFAST - Nobel laureate poet Seamus Heaney officially launched the new Academy for Irish Cultural Heritages. The groundbreaking £3 million research centre is funded under the Department for Employment and Learning's SPUR initiative.
It is located at the University of Ulster's Magee campus and is the world's first Irish cultural research centre.
The aim is to transform the way heritage, culture and tradition arc perceived across Ireland and further afield. Professor Gerry McKenna, university vice-chancellor, said the bringing together of history, Celtic studies and English added an "exciting new dimension" to the study of Ireland's rich and diverse cultural heritage.
Enya Helps to Soothe America
Irish singer Enya has used her famous soothing sound to help console America in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. Sales of the Donegal singer's latest album vl Day Without Rain have soared since the disaster on September 11, shooting the album to number three in the U.S. charts, it has emerged.
CNN used Euya's single Only Time over pictures of the twin towers collapse, which led to the single gaining increased airtime on radio stations. Only Time is now sitting at number 16 in the Hot 100 charts in the U.S.
The single A Day Without Rain was released last year, and has sold steadily throughout America, where Enya has developed a large fanbase. Before the terrorist attacks, the album was sitting at number 19 in the charts, after selling 2.5 million copies. But within one week of the attacks, it moved to number three after selling almost 140,000 copies.
Enya's manager Nicky Ryan said he believed a radio-friendly remix of Only Time had helped push sales. "Enya is never played on American Radio, even though she sells two million albums there," he said. "CNN putting it on their sound bed certainly had an effect."
Van Morrison Denies Affair
BELFAST - Singer Van Morrison has demanded a retraction and apology over claims by American singer Linda Gail Lewis that he had a sexual relationship with her. Lewis made the claims when she appeared on a show hosted by Northern Ireland television personality Gerry Kelly on Ulster Television (UTV). The allegations were later carried in the Sunday Independent
Morrison, who lives mainly in Dublin, issued the following statement, "Ms Lewis makes these allegations knowing that I am intensely private about my personal life, and in the apparent belief that I would not engage in a public row and that her allegations would gain credence as a result.
"For a number of reasons I genuinely hoped that I could maintain a dignified silence in this matter, but I now feel compelled to issue this statement. The matter is now in the hands of my solicitors and I do not intend to say anything further in public on the subject."
The Belfast-born singer, who is in a long-standing relationship with Michelle Rocca. recently recorded a top-selling album with Lewis, who is a sister of the legendary rock artist, Jerry Lec Lewis.
If Morrison docs not receive a satisfactory response, he will be seeking damages against Lewis and both UTV and the Irish Independent.
