ISLA ST. CLAIR: AMBASSADOR FOR SCOTTISH MUSIC
Scottish singer Isla St. Clair from Aberdeen and Buckle has established an international name for herself with her performances of the traditional songs of Scotland, especially the North-East.
Since her first BBC broadcast at the age of 12, Isla has earned a reputation as an ambassador for Scottish music as she toured Europe, North America and Russia. During the Seventies, she began a parallel career in light entertainment and became known to millions in Britain for her numerous television appearances, including The Royal Variety Show, The Marcame and Wise Show.
On September 25, Knowledge Network will present "An Evening with Isla St. Clair" at the James Cowan Theatre in Burnaby.
This will be followed by a performance at the Kelowna Community Theatre presented by the Kelvern Celtic Society on September 28. Guest performers at this event will be the world-famous Simon Fraser Pipe Band. Proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Campbell Family Support Fund. Arran Campbell who passed away in April was a former member of the Kalamalka Highlanders, SFU Pipe Band and the Los Angeles Police Department Pipe Band. Every two years the Mayo diaspora get together to celebrate their heritage, and next year's gathering will be held in Toronto, Ontario. Planning is well advanced for the event to be held May 16 to 18.
This will be the first time the convention is held in Canada and it will be an opportunity to celebrate the history and culture of County Mayo as well as look at life today and the developments planned for the future. For further details, visit www.mayotoronto .homestead.com.
MAYO EMIGRANT SUMMER SCHOOL
The inaugural Mayo Emigrant Summer School was formally opened by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Roy Walters, in Castlebar in August. The keynote speaker at the event was the respected journalist and author Tim Pat Coogan. The event was dedicated to the late Father Joe Taaffe, a County Mayo priest who served in Britain, working closely with emigrants and who campaigned for the Birmingham Six.
