A Delightful Evening of Immortal Music
LETHBRIDGE, Alberta - A combination of the equinox and the full moon on September 21, was celebrated by a special evening of Irish music at Southminster Church. The program was sponsored by the Cuchulainn Club of Lethbridge and the Children of Lir as a benefit for the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra.
A broad selection of classical, traditional and contemporary music was performed by the Children of Lir and Friends with members of the Symphony Orchestra.
The ensemble of 11 accomplished musicians presented works by Turlough O'Carolan, W. B. Yeats and Finbar Furey as well as three original compositions by Tommy Dooley.
A magical blend of instruments and voices enhanced the complexity and beauty of Irish Celtic music at its finest. Of particular note was an enchanting musical rendition of W.B. Yeats poem The Salley Gardens.
Other highlights of the evening were a set of classical compositions by O'Carolan which also included an original composition Round Slieve Gullion by Tommy Dooley and Song For Canada. A delightful contrast was the Chil-
dren of Lir's unique arrangement of Pink Floyd's The Wall.
The appreciative audience included children from St. Patrick's Fine Arts School, Westminster School and Wilson Middle School, courtesy of a generous donation of tickets from the Cuchulainn Club of Lethbridge.
In addition to being a benefit for the Symphony, another positive result of the evening is that Westminster School is interested in adopting special musical events in the city as part of their on-going field trip program.
Those who missed this memorable evening may look forward to
next March 17 when the Cuchulainn Club will celebrate St. Patrick's Day by presenting another evening of immortal Irish music at the Genevieve E. Yates Centre, featuring the Children of Lir and Friends with members of the Lethbridge Symphonv Orchestra.
On another note, the Cuchulainn Club is once again working on collecting stuffed toys for the children of Northern Ireland. The shipment will leave Lethbridge in late November.
Anyone wishing to donate should call the club at (403) 329-0131.
Flatley Must Rejig New Steps
CORK - Lord of the Dance star Michael Flatley has been left reeling after his dream of creating some new steps has come to nothing. The millionaire dancer wanted to demolish the existing entrance steps to his historic home at Castlehyde, County Cork, and replace them with new steps as part of an El million facelift to the Nineteenth Century mansion. Flatley bought Castlehyde, near Fermoy and on the banks of the River Blackwater, for E3.17 million three years ago and has spent more than El.27 million restoring the house to its former glory. But his renovations have been dogged by controversy, first when a hedge was cut down and then after permission was granted for the steps to be removed, it was claimed that the replacement work, including a new terrace and balustrade patio, would obscure two basement windows.
