Community Announcements
PUBLISHER'S LETTER
Thanks for All the Memories
Dear Readers:
T seems fitting that we should mark so many important anniversaries in this issue dedicated to the great fire festival of Samhain - the Celtic new year.
This, of course, is the time when the veil between our world and the Otherworld is most thin and our beloved ancestors draw closer.
Traditionally, it is a time to gather closer in community to mark the passage of the seasons and to honour those who have come before us. It is a time of storytelling, feasting and revelries to help dispel the cold dark nights.
On November 13. a 30th anniversary celebration will be hosted by the Vancouver Irish Sporting and Social Club. A mass will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 2881 Main Street at 4:30PM to remember those deceased members of the Irish community and all other loved ones.
This will be followed by an anniversary dinner and dance to be held at the Cambrian Hall, located at 215 East 17th Avenue in Vancouver [see page 14 for a necrology ofpastlSSC members and friends.]

Club over the past 30 years. I'm sure many will look back with fond Best wishes to all, memories, and no doubt some amusement, when they see the photographs of those familiar faces who now appear so youthful and innocent.
The Seattle Gaels will also mark an historic occasion on November 19, when the club will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a banquet at the Skansonia located at 205 NE Northlake Way in Seattle [for more details, turn to page 32].
Plans are also underway at the Welsh Society of Vancouver to mark the 75th anniversary of the Cambrian Hall. Listed as a heritage site, it located at 17th and Main, was opened in 1929. It has served as home to the Welsh community in Vancouver through good times and bad times.
On November 6, a Grand Concert will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 8 PM. featuring the internationally acclaimed Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir.
The following day. on November 7, the Welsh community will gather at the Cambrian Hall for the Gymanfa Ganu (hymn-singing fellowship) preceded by a bilingual church service at 11 AM [turn to page 5 for more details.]
On behalf of Catholine and myself we wish to extend our best wishes
to all these organizations. It is our privilege to have served the Celtic communities ofWestern Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest for the past 13 years. Over those years, we have made many friends and said farewell to far too many others.
Let us all join together in the period of Samhain and light our own candles of remembrance for those who have departed and say a prayer of thanks for all the wonderful memories.

PRAYER FOR PEACE
October is the month of the rosary. Pray the rosary for peace in our troubled world. Lord God our Father, in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ your Son. you willed to reconcile all mankind to yourself and so to reconcile us with each other in peace. Pour the spirit of peace into the hearts of all and help us to be peacemakers who work in harmony and love. Grant us this gift through Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
Get Well Wishes
Get well wishes to our travel writer Dave Abbott who returned from Hawaii on October 1 with a terrible cold. We were expecting his column within days but received word that he had been admitted to hospital due to his condition. Hope you're feeling better soon Dave and look forward to hearing more about your travels next month.
A Get Well Message
I would like to extend a speedy recovery to Pam Glass who just recently had major back surgery. Pam. who does not like to sit back and be idle, was on the phone the next day (after a four hour operation) picking up her messages. What a trooper! Your family and friends in the Irish Community wish you well and good health after along painful battle. No better woman!
