Top Acts are Smash
Hit for Hogmanay
Concert
EDINBURGH - A hogmanay concert starring top acts Scissor Sisters and Blondie is on the verge of selling out - almost two months before the event.
Ticket outlets are reporting massive demand for the Princes Street Gardens extravaganza. Only about 1,000 tickets are thought to be still available for the show, even though they just went on sale October 16.
And the 8500-capacity Concert in the Gardens event is set to sell out quicker than ever before, according to organizers.
Pete Irvine, Director of Unique Events, the company which organizes the Hogmanay celebrations on behalf of the city council, said, "We've got over 1,000 tickets left at the moment but they 're going pretty quickly and it could sell out within the next week. "
A spokesman for the Tickets Scotland shop on Rose Street said, "Tickets are literally flying out the door for the concert. We've not got many left and it's looking like it will sell out very soon.
"I'd say it's mostly local people that are buying tickets, which is quite different from previous years when we've had tourists coming in quite late on to buy them. "
It has been revealed that all tickets for the event are expected to be sold well before the full program for this year's Hogmanay is announced on November 18. Such has been the demand for tickets, which are priced £30 and £35, organizers have stopped advertising the concert.
Meanwhile, more than half of the tickets for this year's Royal Bank Street Party have also already been snapped up, including all of those made available to the general public.
The 50,000passes made available on the internet, over the counter at The Hub box office and via a telephone hotline at the beginning of October have completely gone.
Celtic Design Stained Glass With Scottish and Irish Themes
By CATHOUNE BUTLER
VANCOUVER - Janet Thompson is a very busy lady, she holds down a full-time day job, she is a tenor drummer with the Sir John A. Macdonald Pipe Band, and she is also a stained glass design artist with her own company called Designs of Scotland.
Janet is English-born and married to a Scotsman and she recently spoke to The Celtic Connection about her music and stained-glass designs which feature a Scottish and an Irish theme. She said, "I do St. Andrew's Cross panels and a thistle design, I also do an Irish Claddagh bevelled glass and a stained glass Claddagh along with painted glassware."
The Sir John A. MacDonald Pipe Band regularly performs in parades and show functions. On October 22, the band performed at the B. C. Place stadium half-time show of the B.C. Lions game for the Salute to Veterans.
The following day, the band recorded a segment at the Canadian Broadcasting Studios (CBC) in Vancouver for The Greatest Canadian which was spotlighting Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first Prime Minister.
The Sir John A. Macdonald Pipe Band has recently joined forces with the Triumph Street Pipe Band for competitions, and Janet said, "we're always looking for new players to join us."
With the Christmas season fast approaching, Janet has some unique stained/etched designs for those Celts on your gift list or for something special for yourself. There are the Scottish lion rampant designs on the beer mugs, Scottish and Irish designs to hang in your window or home and lovely thistle design vases.
